SUMMARY:
was discovered deceased this morning in the driver seat of his rental car.
INFORMATION:
I was in Baldwin on patrol. I was contacted by Sgt. David Johnston of the Hart Post to respond to the MSP
Command Center located on Cleveland Road at the Electric Forest Festival in Rothbury. I was advised a
subject had been found deceased in a vehicle and I was being requested to conduct Evidence Technician work
at the scene. Upon my arrival, I was advised I would be the primary investigator assigned to the complaint.

The wallet was located in right rear cargo shorts pocket.
VEHICLE INVOLVED:
2012 Toyota Yaris, Black in color, bearing Connecticut license plate 877 ZAD.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS:
Made of scene.
EXAMINATION OF BODY:
body was seated in the driver seat, in approximately a 45 degree reclined position.
arms were both in a bent position, and his head was tilted slightly back and to the right.
Livor mortis and rigor mortis were present at time of initial examination.
was barefoot. sandals and shoes were present on the driver side floorboard under the
brake/gas pedals.
was wearing a t-shirt, green cargo pants with side pockets, and boxer shorts.
EVIDENCE SEIZED:
An empty plastic baggie was observed next to right cargo pocket on the driver seat surface.
I seized this plastic baggie as evidence at 1018 Hours.
Three (3) cell phones were also present in the passenger compartment of the vehicle at the time of
examination.
1) Samsung AT&T phone, silver in color, was on the top surface of the front passenger seat.

2) HTC brand phone, on the top surface of the front passenger seat next to the Samsung phone.
3) LG brand phone, located in a pocket on the passenger side of the front center console
I checked the cargo shorts pockets of I removed the following items from pockets:
Right front pocket: multicolored cigarette lighter. Lighter was left with vehicle.
Right front cargo pocket: Zig Zag brand rolling papers and a knotted plastic baggie containing green plant
material consistent in appearance with marijuana. Seized at 1015 Hours.
Left front pocket: open box of "Maverick" brand cigarettes in box. Seized at 1020 Hours.
Sealed plastic baggie containing multiple unknown types/quantities of pills/suspected narcotics. Seized at
1024 Hours.
Left side cargo pocket: Two plastic pill capsules containing unknown white crystal powder substance.
Seized at 1023 Hours. Pill capsules are contained inside a small plastic resealable bag container. Stainless
steel scissors and a Lil' Wayne CD case were removed from this pocket. The scissors and CD case were
examined, and left inside vehicle.
Right rear pocket: Wallet containing CT Driver's License, assorted credit cards, assorted papers, and $665
cash. Seized at 1030 Hours. Counted/verified with Detective Rios. DD-020 completed.
Left rear pocket: multicolored lighter contained in left rear pocket. Lighter was examined and left with
vehicle.
ADDITIONAL OBSERVATION:
I noted in the center console of the vehicle a digital scale containing an unknown brownish residue on its
surface. This item was not seized and was returned to the center console.

RENTAL AGENCY:
At 1345 Hours on 6-29-12, I notified "Barb" of National Car Rental Customer Service of the location of their
rental vehicle at Eagle Towing. The vehicle was confirmed to have been rented by
I attempted to telephone the Forensic Pathology laboratory on the afternoon of 6-29-12, and received an
answering machine. I left a voicemail message.
I later attempted contact again via the hospital switchboard and spoke with "ELIZABETH" at the Forensic
Pathology laboratory at 1420 Hours on 6-29-12. I was advised that an autopsy was already underway and
that a complete toxicology report was in process at this time. The estimated wait time on toxicology results is
estimated to be 4-6 weeks.

I contacted MSP East Lansing Operations Desk via LEIN and forwarded a message regarding
passing. I provided Post 62 contact information, as well as Harris' Funeral Home contact information. The
message was forwarded to East Haven, CT Police Department to make a death notification to family.
I received a telephone call at Post 62 from advised she was the mother of
asked if was "all right." I asked if the officer there had explained anything, and
advised "no." I explained to that had passed away this morning in Rothbury. A subject
identifying himself as uncle then took the phone call, and advised that was hysterical and
unable to continue the call. I explained again about passing. The uncle advised I would receive
a call back when things calmed down.
At 1655 Hours, I received a call back from who advised he was stepfather. I explained
the facts of passing as I knew at this point, and provided Harris Funeral Home contact
information. I was advised that did not know to use any narcotics or have any medical
issues. was last seen by "a couple of weeks ago."

ARRIVAL ON SCENE:
At 0756 we were dispatched to a possible deceased person in a car. Trooper Groya and I arrived on scene,
medical was already there. A white male subject was seated in the driver's seat of a rental car, medical staff
had pronounced him dead.
SCENE SECURITY:
I began taking photographs of the scene while Sgt. Schmitz and Trooper Groya put out crime scene tape.
PHOTOGRAPHS OF SCENE:
Utilizing my department issued digital camera I took photographs of the scene, the body and anything relevant
to the scene. The photographs were turned over to Trooper Tanner from the Hart Post.
INVESTIGATION:
Sgt. Schmitz contacted the command staff who sent D/Sgt. Rios to complete the investigation. Once all
photographs and personal on scene were identified Trooper Groya and I cleared the scene.

ARRIVAL ON SCENE:
At 0756 we were dispatched to a possible deceased person in a car. Trooper Nobliski responded to the scene
and arrived after medical. Medical staff had already declared him dead on arrival prior to us arriving.
Jason and Kristin are EMS for Montcalm County EMS and are currently working for National Event Services
for the Electric Forest Festival. The arrived on scene and observed the deceased in the driver's seat of a black
rental car. They checked his pulse on his left wrist and neck with no response. Rigor had set in and he was
ashen in color. They declared him dead on arrival and did not continue with medical.

and were sharing a tent located behind (east) of the deceased's vehicle. They advised that
they had not had contact with the individuals but had seen them around 2:00pm 6/29/12 setting up camp. They
did not see them the rest of the day or night because and were not at their camp. The next
time they saw the deceased law enforcement was already on scene.
FURTHER INVESTIGATION:
Sgt. Schmitz contacted the command staff who sent D/Sgt. Rios to complete the investigation.

INFORMATION:
I was contacted by LT. HENKE, who requested I respond to the Electric Forest Festival grounds for a DOA.
I was further advised by the MSP Hart Post that TPR. TANNER was responding as the Evidence Tech to the
scene. Upon arrival at the Electric Forest Festival's grounds, I was escorted to the scene by SGT. DAVE
JOHNSON.
OBSERVATIONS AT SCENE:
Upon arriving on the scene, I observed evidence tape around the victim's vehicle. SGT. CARL SCHMITZ
was present, as well as TPR. DOUG TANNER.
SGT. SCHMITZ advised me the adjoining campers had already been contacted and interviewed by the
troopers, as well as nothing had been touched from the driver's side of the victims vehicle. There was also an
individual pointed out to me by SGT. SCHMITZ, later identified as who was with the
victim.
I observed an individual, later identified as who was seated in the driver's seat of the
vehicle with his head in the back position. I was further advised that the medical examiner was not
responding to the scene. At that time I interviewed
The body of was removed from the vehicle by TPR. TANNER, assisted by EMS,
where he was placed into a body bag at the scene. Trooper Tanner advised me there did not appear to be any
indication of foul play. was subsequently transported to the medical tent, where he was
transferred to and , from Harris Funeral Home, to be transported to Spectrum for
an autopsy. I advised TPR. TANNER he would be handling the original complaint and I would be assisting
him on this complaint.

INTERVIEW
He stated he had met the person he knew as he didn't know his last name, at a previous concert. He
stated he goes to several concerts during the year and he hooks up with at these concerts. He stated he
and rode to the concert together this year from Connecticut. They met in Connecticut and then went to
house, where he picked up some clothes and they left to come to Michigan. stated they left
about 6:30 on Wednesday and drove 15 hours straight through to Michigan. drove the entire time.
They arrived at the concert/ festival around noon on June 28, 2012.
stated Thursday evening, the 28th, was saying his stomach didn't feel good, as well as he had
a headache. indicated he was going to sit outside and sleep in the chair and say hi to people as they
walked by the car. They did not have a tent as they were just staying in a car. subsequently fell
asleep outside in the chair. When woke up, he tried to wake and he found deceased
in the vehicle.
I asked if there was anything else going on, to which he indicated there wasn't and no altercations,
just that he wasn't feeling well and went to sleep.
I asked if he had also been snorting the same drugs, to which he indicated he had not, as he doesn't
do drugs. He stated he stopped drinking as he's an alcoholic. He has a previous DUI and a reckless driving.
I asked if ate anything, to which he didn't believe he ate anything. He believes he may have had some
food from the gas station; however, didn't believe he ate anything.
