AVOGADRO’S LAW
In 1811, an Italian scientist named Lorenzo Romano Amadeo Carlo
Avogadro (1776-1856) complemented the works of Boyle and Charles. He
stated under constant pressure and temperature, the number of moles of a
particular gas sample is directly proportional to the volume of a gas. This is
the Avogadro’s law: Relationship between amount of gas and
volume.

Sample Solving Problems:

1. A sample with 0.15 moles of gas has a volume

of 2.5 L. What is the volume if the sample is
increased to 0.55 moles?

Find the Given: FIND:

N1 = 0.15 mol V2 = ? SOL’N:

V1 = 2.5 L V2 = (0.55 mol)(2.5L) = 9.2 L

N2 = 0.55 mol 0.15 mol

2. A 4.8-L sample of helium gas contains 0.22 mol of helium. How many additional moles of
helium gas must be added to the sample to obtain a volume of 6.4 L?

Find the Given: Find: Sol’n:

V1=4.8 L N2=? N2=(0.22mol)(6.4L) = 0.29 mol

N1=0.22 mol 4.8L

V2=6.4 L

GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW
Gay-Lussac’s law is a gas law which states that the pressure exerted by a gas (of a
given mass and kept at a constant volume) varies directly with the absolute temperature of
the gas. In other words, the pressure exerted by a gas is proportional to the temperature of
the gas when the mass is fixed and the volume is constant.

(P1/T1) = (P2/T2)

SAMPLE PROBLEM SOLVING

1. The pressure of a gas in a cylinder when it is heated to a temperature of 250K is

1.5 atm. What was the initial temperature of the gas if its initial pressure was 1
atm.
FIND THE GIVEN: FIND:

P1= 1 atm T1=?

T2=250K

P2= 1.5 atm

SOL’N:

Using the formula.

T1=(1atm)(250K) = 166.66K

1.5 atm

2. At a temperature of 300K, the pressure of the gas in a deodorant can is 3 atm.

Calculate the pressure of the gas when it is heated to 900K.

FIND THE GIVEN: FIND:

T1=300K P2=?
P1=3 atm
T2=900K
SOL’N:
P2= (3atm)(900k) = 9 atm
300K

QUIZZZZZBEEEE
DIRECTIONS: Solve the following problems make sure to indicate your solution. Use the back
page of the paper if the space provided is not enough.

1. A flexible container at an initial volume of 5.120 L contains 8.500 mol of gas. More gas
is then added to the container until it reaches a final volume of 18.10 L. Assuming the
pressure and temperature of the gas remain constant, calculate the number of moles of
gas added to the container.

2. A 6.0 L sample at 25°C and 2.00 atm of pressure contains 0.5 mole of a gas. If an
additional 0.25 mole of gas at the same pressure and temperature are added, what is
the final total volume of the gas?

3. A 20-liter cylinder contains 6 atmospheres (atm) of gas at 27 C. What would the

pressure of the gas be if the gas was heated to 77 C?
