MODULE 5: EXPRESSING PERSONAL OPINIONS IN
WRITTEN FORMS

This module will discuss the three characteristics of a paper that can be classified into
three: reaction paper, review paper, and critique paper. At the end of this module, you
will be required to choose one from them and produce a publishable paper either for a
newspaper or for the internet.

LEARNING GOALS:

 I can use appropriate critical approaches in writing a critique such as formalism


and feminism.
 I can write an objective/balanced review or critique of a work of art, an event, or a
program.

I. MY STARTER
You express yourown opinion in writing a reaction, review, and critique paper.

ACTIVITY NO. 1

Have you seen the commercial of RC Cola with a kid that has 4 glasses at his
back and a mother that hides a bottle inside her head? Are you one of the 7
million viewers who scratched their heads? Have you asked yourself its
relevance? How did the ads creators come up with such an idea and what were
they thinking? Have you posted your interpretation on social media?

II. WHAT TO KNOW
This learning task will give you additional information about reaction paper,
review paper, and critique paper. Study the lesson and accomplish this task
independently. If you have questions and clarifications, you can message me.

TASK NO. 1
 Open your book in English for Academic and Professional Purposes and
turn to page 144-149. I want you to read and analyze the information in
your book. I also provided a soft copy of the handout for this lesson for
those students who do not have a copy of their book.

Directions: Read the following statements. Check the TRUE column if the

IV. REAL-LIFE APPLICATION
Directions: Write a critique paper about the English movie “Little Women”
found in your flash drive. Your paper should include your evaluation and critical
judgment about the movie. It should give a balanced outlook on facts and
opinions. It should be clear and comprehensive.

Content:
In writing the content, follow the specifications indicated in the format
section. The content of your paper should also include the introduction, the body,
and the conclusion.

Tips on how to get started in writing your paper:


1. Watch the material or subject of your paper.
2. Choose three major points that you would like to emphasize and focus on
in your paper. For example, I the movie, you would like to focus on the
roles of the cast, the issues presented in the movie, and the impact of the
movie on the viewers.
3. Define what your thesis statement is. Write it down. You may write several
thesis statements, revise, and choose one later on.
4. Have a conclusive statement.

Format:
1. Paper size: 8.5” x 11” (letter size)
2. Spacing: Double-spaced
3. Font: Times New Roman
4. Font size: 12 points
5. Margins: 1 inch on all sides
6. Footer: Page number (Page ___ of ___)

Cover Page:
The cover should contain the following:

Title of your paper


Your name
The name of you teacher
The date you have submitted the paper
Your section/year
The name of your school
