21st Century Literature from the Philippines

Activity (Week 3 file#1)

1) What do you think are the importance of Ladinos in history

and Literature?

Answer: Ladino is an exonym invented during the colonial era to refer to Spanish
speakers who are not Peninsulars, Criollos or indigenous peoples. This development marked the
beginning of Indio literacy and thus spurred the creation of the first written literary native text
by the native. These writers, called ladinos because of their fluency in both Spanish and Tagalog
(Medina, pp. 55-56), published their work, mainly devotional poetry, in the first decade of the
17th century.

2) Why is it that in Komedya or Moro-Moro, the Christians always won against

the Muslims? How do you think the latter reacts to this?
Answer: The christian always wins because it's popolar. Christians always win over
muslims because they think that all Muslims are rebels who shouldn't be the same as Christians
who are still christian or the good and not the evil (Muslims then stand counter-terrorism in
moro-moros).

3) Name other personalities of the Pre-Colonial, Colonial, and Contemporary

Literature that are not mentioned earlier.
