a. Recognize the importance and functions of straight through cable.
b. Enumerate the procedure in creating straight through cable.
c. Perform the procedure in creating straight through cable.

A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
1. Daily Routine
Let us pray (Everybody will stand and pray)

2. Greetings
Good morning class! Good morning, ma’am.

You may now take your seats Thank you, ma’am.

3. Checking of Attendance
Who is absent secretary? Nobody ma’am.

4. Review of the past lesson

Last meeting, we have discussed the different tools,
materials, devices and equipment needed in
networking.

Can you give me some examples of these devices? Ma’am, we used Switch when connecting
And its function? two or more computers.

Very good! Another example? We also have Patch Panel used to

connect wide area networks, ma’am.

B. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES
1. Activity
a) Motivation
Before we proceed to our discussion, we will have a
short game.
MECHANICS
1. The teacher will give each student a colored Game Proper)
paper similar to LAN Cable’s color combination.
2. The teacher will say what color combination the
students will arrange. (T568A or T568B)
3. The students will find and create a group
according to what color combination the teacher
will say.
4. The first group to arrange will be the winner.

Is it clear? Yes, ma’am!

2. Analysis

Class what did you noticed about our activity a Ma’am arrangement of color coding in

Today, we will be discussing about straight-through

cables. When to use and how to create a straight-
through cable.

that will be used in creating a network between
computers, routers and other network devices.

Now, there are two types of Ethernet/LAN cables,

and what are these?

Types of Ethernet/LAN Cables

1. Straight through cable
2. Crossover cable

The first one is straight-through cable and the other

is the crossover cable. But for this session, we will
focus on the straight-through cable.

So, what is a straight-through cable?

Straight-through cable – a type of twisted pair Student will read definition.

cable that is used in local area networks to connect a
computer to a network hub such as router.

The teacher will give examples of the instances that

a straight through cable will be used.

These are the connections that use straight-through

cable.

1. Switch to PC
2. Switch to Router
3. Switch to Patch Panel
4. Patch Panel to PC

Now, class from these examples, what have you Straight-through cables are used to
observed? connect different devices.

Very good!

Rule of Thumb:
Straight-through cable is used to connect two unlike
devices.

Class that is when to use the cable. Now, the next

thing you need to learn is how to create the cable.

Now, if you are going to terminate or splice a

straight-through cable you should always follow the
industry standard. Because in creating a straight
through there are two color combination standards.
The first is the T568A and the other one is the
T568B color combination. So, for instance, if we use
T568A on one side of the cable we also use the same
code on the other side. Did you get it? Yes ma’am.

Color Codes for Terminating a Straight-through

Cable

However, it is a common practice in the industry

that the T568B color code is used for straight-
through cables. Which means, we will be using the
T568B in creating our straight-through cable,
although, T568A can also be used in creating a
straight-through cable. Yes ma’am.
Do you understand class?

We are done identifying what color code will be

used for our straight-through cable.  Now, I will
demonstrate to you how to make a straight through
cable. But before making the straight-through cable, Yes ma’am.

demonstrate because after this, you will be making
your own straight-through cable.  Am I understood?

The teacher will demonstrate to class how to create a

straight-through cable.
Steps in Creating a Straight-through Cable
1. Get the needed length of the cable and add a little
extra wire, just in case.
2. Carefully remove the outer jacket of the cable.
Make sure not to cut the wires inside. One good way
to do this is to cut lengthwise with snips or a knife
along the side of the cable, away from yourself,
about an inch toward the open end.
3. Check the wires for any cuts that can expose the
copper wire inside. If it has any, you will need to cut
the entire wires off and start over at step one.
Because exposed copper wire will lead to poor
performance of connectivity.
4. Untwist the pairs and lay it flat. The white piece
of thread can be cut off even with the jacket and
disposed. For easier handling, cut the wires so that
they are ¾” long from the base of the jacket and
even in length.
5. Arrange the wires based on the wiring
specifications you are following.
6. Make sure that the color arrangement is in correct
order.
7. Press all the wires flat and parallel between your
thumb and forefinger. Cut the top of the wires even
with one another so that they are ½” long from the
base of the jacket leaving a ½” of room for the
individual cables. Ensure that the cut wires are even
and clean.
8. Keep the wires flat and in order as you push them
into the RJ-45 plug with the flat surface of the plug
on top. You can tell if all the wires made it into the
jack if the wire is located in each hole. You may
have to use a little effort to push the pairs firmly into
the plug. Verify that the sequence is still correct
before crimping.
9. Place the wired plug into the crimping tool. Give
the handle a firm squeeze. Once you have completed
the crimp, the handle will reset to the open position.
To ensure all pins are set, some prefer to double-
crimp by repeating this step.
10. Repeat all the steps with the other end of the
cable.
11. Test the cable to ensure that it will function in
the field. Miswired connection could led to physical
damage of computers or phone system equipment. A
simple cable tester can quickly verify that
information for you.
Yes ma’am.
There you have it. Those are the steps.

Were you able to follow the procedure class?

Do you have a questions or clarifications?

4. Application

So, it’s now your turn to make your straight-through

cable. You already have your groupings. You also
have the tools and materials with you. If you have
any questions during the activity, you should raise
your hand for you to be recognized. Also, minimize
your voice and avoid unnecessary noise while Yes ma’am.

Always take into considerations that before using the

cable in connecting actual devices. It is suggested
that you must use a LAN tester first to check the
functionality of the cable.
