PAST SIMPLE

Topic: past simple with action verbs.

1. DEFINITION
Actions are completed in the past and it doesn’t appear in the present.

2. SIGNALS TO RECOGNISED THE SIMPLE PAST

- Yesterday
- Last …… (last winter, last holiday, last year, last week, last birthday…)
- …ago (three days ago, 4 years ago, 5 minutes ago…)
- In the past
- In the last century
- In + month / year / century (in June, in 2000, in the 16th century, in the 17th
century…)
- On Monday, on Tuesday …….
3. TYPES OF ACTION VERBS IN PAST SIMPLE
There are 2 types:
- Regular verbs (động từ có quy tắc)

Action verbs + ‘ed’

- Irregular verbs (động từ bất quy tắc)

Action verbs (base form)  past simple

OR: column 2: learn by heart

4. FORMS

POSITIVE I / He / She / It / You / We /They had eggs for

breakfast yesterday.
I / He / She / It / You / We /They played basketball in
the garden three minutes ago.
NEGATIVE I / He / She / It / You / We /They DIDN’T have eggs for
breakfast yesterday.
I / He / She / It / You / We /They DIDN’T play
basketball in the garden three minutes ago.
QUESTION  Yes, I / He / She / It / You / We
DID he / she / it/ I / you / we / they have eggs for /They did.
breakfast yesterday?
 No, I / He / She / It / You / We
/They didn’t.

PRACTICE: Put the verbs in brackets into past simple tense.

1/ Monika (work) late last Friday.
 Monika worked late last Friday.
2/ She (has) a lot of work to do, and (has) to stay in the office until 7.30 pm.
 She had a lot of work to do, and had to stay in the office until 7.30pm.

3/ After dinner, they (watch) a movie together and (go) to bed at 11.30 pm.

 After dinner, they watched a movie together and went to bed at 11.30pm.
