Description
• This module provides students with relevant the principles
of heat transfer, fluid flow and thermodynamics for
application to buildings and their engineering systems.

Aim
• The aim of this module is to provide students related
engineering backgrounds with an insight and understanding
of the fundamentals of heat transfer, fluid flow and
thermodynamics for application to buildings and their
engineering systems.

Course content
• Steam cycles basic Rankine cycle, Rankine cycle with superheat and 
irreversibility, reheat, regeneration 
• Air standard cycles, Otto, Diesel, comparison to real cycles, Brayton 
cycle
• Refrigeration cycle and heat pumps (reversed Carnot, Vapor‐
compression)
• Dimensional analysis, internal & external flows, Lift/drag coefficients & 
Stokes law
• Viscous/Inertial forces and Reynolds number – Velocity profiles, 
Turbulence, Boundary layer, Poiseuille and Stokes Law
• Combustion ‐ Stoichiometric and non‐stoichiometric, types of flames, 
adiabatic flame temperature
• Heat Transfer heat equation (3D and time dependence), conduction 
resistance networks, applications, convection, Radiation.

A. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of the module students will acquire knowledge 
and understanding of:
A1. the principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid 
flow, applied to buildings.

intellectual skills that will enable them to:
B1. critically appraise, analyse and solve numerical problems of a 
familiar or unfamiliar nature.
B2. interpret generated and collected numerical data.
