Cholistan
Deserts are famous for being extremely hot, dry, often remote and dangerous as well.
Therefore, people think that deserts are dull and boring however, that’s not the complete
truth. Infact, deserts can be extremely beautiful.
Cholistan is known as the land of myths, legends, folk melodies and romance. Spreading over an
area of about 26,933 sq.km, it is divided into “Lesser Cholistan” and “Greater Cholistan” in the
districts of Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar. In the local dialect Cholistan is
called “Rohi”. It is intriguing to know that Cholistan wasn’t a desert from the start; instead it was once
a green and prosperous land. It had a great water source of the Hakra River during the Great Hakra
Valley Civilization which is also known as “Ghaggar-Hakra Civilization”. However, in 600 B.C, the
river started to become irregular and eventually it dried and turned into a desert which today we
know as a “Cholistan”
The tangible assets include archeological sites, forts, the unique life style of nomadic people there,
the folk music and dance, poetry, rites and rituals; these all things simply reflect a unique distinctive
life style there. Even you would be astonished to see that there are still remains of the Hakra Valley
Civilization in the form of traditional motifs, designs and pottery making. he lifestyle of the local
people is still traditional there.

even famous for making awe-inspiring exquisites gindi (bed or floor spreads). Cholistan has
