AP Biology-Water Potential Problems

Due: Thursday Feb 28th.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDZud2g1RVY

1. What is ᵠs of a 0.5 M sucrose solution at 25 degrees Celsius?

-IRCT = -(1)(0.5)(0.0831)(25+273)= 12.3819

2. If a cell’s ᵠp = 3 bars and its ᵠs = -4.5 bars, what is the resulting ᵠ?

-4.5 + 3 = -1.5

3. A cell is in equilibrium with its surroundings. The molarity of sucrose solution is 0.5M

a. Calculate the solute potential of surrounding solution

-IRCT = -(1)(0.5)(0.0831)(25+273)= 12.3819

b. What is the water potential of the surrounding solution?

Zero, because it is in equilibrium so there is no movement of water
from higher concentration to lower concentration.

4. Calculate water potential of a solution of 0.15M sucrose

w = p + s
X = 0 + [-iCRT]
X = 0 + [-(1) (0.15) (0.0831) (298)
X = 0 + (-3.71)
w = -3.71
