The Marathon
The OWM is an online event, lasting 48 continuous
hours. Every hour a new workshop starts. The
teachers are the creators themself, who will teach
their original models. Teaching is done via Zoom
Webinar, with online video streaming.

Our aim is to show solidarity around the world,

putting artists from 31 different countries togeth-
er, and promote Origami on a global scale. We
also want to give all the folders a nice dosage of
origamiphine to help pass the epidemics quaran-
tine days in good mental health...

How to read the Timetable
To fully enjoy the marathon you have to understand the timetable and how to know when a
specific workshop will take place in your time-zone!

Option 1: Mark only workshops you want to attend in your calendar

In this booklet, every workshop has a link. like this: Add this class to your calender
This link can add the event to your own calendar, in your local time!

Option 2: Show entire schedule ( all 48 hours) in your calendar

You can add all the complete calendar of the event to your calendar by using this link:
Add the complete marathon to your calendar

Option 3: Setting your time zone ( is that what this is?, if yes, it’s not really option 3, right?)
The program starts at 22/8/2020 at 00:00 GMT (Greenwich Mean TIme)
and shows all times in GMT +0.
To verify your GMT, go to this site . There is no need to input any information. Please be aware of
the [+] or [-] signs!
Add your GMT (or subtract, if yours in a [-] GMT) to the indicated hour in the program. The result
shows the hour in your time zone.
For example, if you live in NYC, your GMT is [-4]. Since the first workshop starts at 00:00 GMT, it will
be 20:00 (21/8/2020) in NYC.

7
Difficulty Level
Our models range from simple to super-complex. You may try to fold them all, but some may be
too difficult for you to enjoy.
Please, make sure the level of difficulty fits your experience level.
You can join every workshop you’d like to, but please note that workshops will not slow down for
the slowest person in the class. This simply cannot happen with such a big group of folders.
If the pace is too quick or you need a repeat, please write these requests in the Q&A window during
the workshop. Our moderators will constantly be checking the questions and depending on the
number of requests balances with the time allotted for the workshop, will ask the teacher to slow
down, repeat, etc.

Scale of Difficulty Levels:

Simple workshops last 25 to 30 minutes (although the time slot is one hour) and the complex
workshops last 100 to 110 minutes (in a two-hour time slot).
Here is a list of models available on different YouTube channels, varying from simple to
complex. Try to fold them to determine your level of folding.

⋆ Simple Level:
Boat
Tico Star
Bird

⋆⋆ Intermediate Level:
Catapult
Tyrannosaurus
Owl

⋆⋆⋆ High Intermediate Level:

Rabbit
Skull that Talks and Flies
Fox

⋆⋆⋆⋆ Complex Level:

Lazy Panda
Dog
Styracosaurus

⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆ Shuki Kato Level:

There is no tutorial for this. If you folded one of his models you know what to
expect.

8
Prepare your Paper
Be prepared with the right paper and all other tools needed! Look at the workshop page for the
recommended paper type and size.
Some workshops require preparations in advance! The workshop will start assuming you have
done those preparations!!
For example, workshop#1 needs a prefolded grid of 6 by 6 on your paper. For workshop #23 you
need a cardboard and a packing knife!

Cyber Code of Conduct
1. It is important to the organizers that all participants ask questions and make comments in
the Q&A in a respectful way. Therefore, we have established a Code of Conduct for all
attendees to follow. If an attendee violates the Code of Conduct, they will receive a
warning. A subsequent violation will result in being removed from the live session. The
attendee will still receive the recording of the class.
2. All teachers and moderators are able to see all comments and questions in the Q&A
3. No typing in CAPS LOCK. This is the equivalent of yelling which would not be acceptable at
an in-person event.
4. Do not share negative criticism of the teacher, teaching style or class. It is not the time or
place and would not be acceptable at an in-person event.
5. Do not repeat questions if they are not answered right away. Many questions are being
asked and there is one moderator handling all the questions.
6. Do not ask to have steps repeated multiple times. The teacher is going at a certain pace in
order to complete the class within the allotted time period. He/she will be repeating steps
twice. You will be getting a link to the recording of this class if you are unable to keep up.
These questions and comments will just be dismissed.

About:
With over 15 years of experience in paper folding Juho Könkkölä focuses on designing
expressive and figurative human characters, which have gained their inspiration from
history, folk tales, mythologies, books, movies, and video games. The characters are
complex and detailed origami models, which are made from only a single square sheet of
a paper, without any cutting. It can take months of work to create a finished model from
an idea. The challenge of creating complex forms from a simple geometric shape keeps
him passionate about the art. There are no limits in what can be created from a single
square.
Juho Könkkölä is also interested in photography and digital art in many forms. He has a
studied visual art in university of applied sciences in Lapland and is currently working as a
visual artist. He exhibits his works in art galleries and museums, one of his most notable

World Exhibition in Japan and my work has been published internationally in magazines

2011 I switched from print media to making video tutorials on YouTube www.you-
tube.com/jeremyshaferorigami . I make a new video every week and often try to design
what my viewers are most requesting. I used to also earn my living entertaining at county
fairs and other festivities but now instead of in-person events I offer Zoom origami tutoring
sessions and virtual origami parties via www.calendly.com/jeremyshafer . On the side I'm
an avid juggler, unicyclist and handwhistler and my sport of choice is unicycle basketball

Curved Tessellation
Difficulty level: ⋆⋆

Add this class to your calender

Paper Type: Printer paper (easier to fold!), Tant, Elephant Hide

Paper Size: A4 or similar

Special Preparations: scorer: old pen, scoring tool or other sharp object.
Template: piece of good cuttable cardstock or plastic (I use old notebook covers or
notepad backs) about a4 size or a5 size. A4 printer paper
About:
To create her art, Lukasheva uses both her knowledge about smooth curved surfaces, symmetry,
tilings and her inner feeling of pure geometrical beauty. Her geometric tessellations are created
from flat sheets of paper, transformed through the act of folding into complex, structured
objects. Each design is not only a beautiful ornament, but has an engineering process behind it
that is invisible to the viewer. Unlike molded sculptures, her tessellations are designed so that
they can be unwrapped and returned to their original flat form at any time. This involves the use
of mathematical concepts to make it possible and certain restrictions in the shapes achievable.
Ekaterina Lukasheva’s art is half about beauty and half about the exploration of possible with the
complex curved folds and a flat sheet of paper.
Her unofficial art motto is, “Create new shapes instead of reusing well-known ones”. This motto
pushes her further in her explorations of the topology of paper.

About:
Hi from India! I have been an Origami enthusiast since 1989. I began with paper airplanes.
Then Samuel Randlett and John Montroll got me hooked on to representational Origami.
From folding in isolation to folding with a global community; from folding palm-sized
models in a small room to folding a 105 ft (32 m) model in an airplane hangar, it’s been a
long, eventful and thoroughly enjoyable journey.

The model you will learn here is the Seated Peacock. It was designed specifically for the
Origami World Marathon, 2020. Peacock is the national bird of India and, as such, holds a
dear place in my heart. I hope you enjoy this model. Keep folding!

Soon after she also started to create her own models. She loves geometry, which is the
most characteristic feature in her creations. Her models include stars, flowers, boxes,
tessellations and knotology polyhedra. As a teacher she is very interested in ways how to
use origami in education for better and deeper understanding of geometry. She was invit-
ed to many European origami conventions, and also to Israel and USA. In 2018 she pub-
lished her first book “Origami Journey” mapping the past 10 years of her origami expora-
tions. She drew diagrams for the book ""Shaping Paper"" by David Gachepapier, which

About:
My name is Francesco Mancini, I live in Florence, Italy. I discovered origami about fifteen
years ago in a restaurant. A friend of mine showed me then thaught me a Flapping bird
designed by Sam Randlett. I already knew the boat, the plane and other traditional
models but that model intrigued me and it gave me the pulse to know more of this art and
its possibilities. I like modulars but I also love to fold simple and action models. Since ten
years, I started to create my models and I published a collection of diagrams. Currently,
I'm working on a new publication. At the beginning I was a lone paper folder then I joined
the Centro Diffusione Origami, I started to meet a group of local folders and to attend to
the annual conventions. Now I'm in the CDO board and I'm an editor of the magazine
Quadrato Magico. I also like to teach origami and I'm lucky to do that, mostly with chil-
dren, at the Museum of Mathematics in Florence where we propose origami as a teaching
device. In my video I'll show you how to fold the units for a 2D star and hot to make a

Difficulty level: ⋆

Add this class to your calender

Paper Type: Very soft paper like napkin paper, Handkerchief,

hygienic paper,... (no silk paper)
Paper Size: We will cut the paper to the right size.

About:
I learned the traditional rosacea at school when I was 9 years old. Then I did a lot of varia-
tions of this model. I continued to learn simple models and, in 2011, I saw a waiter folding
a rose in paper napkin. I reproduced it and derived it to satisfy my taste. As soon as I saw
the diagram of Florence Girard’s flamenco dancer, I wanted to fold it and to adapt it to
ballet dancer. I didn’t have silk paper, so I tried various king of papers: non printed news-
paper (result not fluid enough for me), paper handkerchief (the model was very fluid but
didn’t stand on its own), paper napkin, and toilet paper. Finally, toilette paper gave the
best result: a very delicate model that can stand on its own. I have then applied this tech-
nique to create characters and flowers, the richness of nature giving me inspiration. The
laboratory paper towels, with similar composition than toilet paper but with bigger
sheets, have opened new horizons for me. I like the vaporous side, the lighting effects, and
the purity of the white color that this paper can bring.

and years later he graduated in architecture.
It was out of mere curiosity, that João Charrua first took up origami, which developed into
an absorbing hobby and later a serious undertaking.
His paper sculptures are a journey through the places of his imagination. They are a
physical translation of the ideas that inhabit his mind and come from the most different
universes with the most diverse influences.
The limitation of only using folds as a transformative process implies a formal challenge
that is strongly reflected in the aesthetics of his pieces.

I first discovered origami in Montreal's botanical garden when I was about 5 years old and
got hooked. My local library was my best source for new models to fold, followed by inter-
net many years later. At the time, I was able to improvise some models of my own by using
the traditional bases. My first «true» creations came for a high school project: design an
origami chess set. After testing out various techniques to make chess pieces, I opted for
boxpleating or the use of square grids. As boxpleating made a lot of sense to me, this
became the technique I would be using up to this day. The type of models I create are
complex humanoid characters and objects. More recently, I've added 2D sceneries and
geometrical shapes to my repertoire.
