Multiple Intelligences
Howard Gardener believes that there are different intelligences among all human beings. It is
possible to cultivate and enhance or neglect and undermine these multiple intelligences. His 1991
study established seven intelligences; he has come to believe that there are a total of nine
intelligences in the intermediate period:

Mathematical-Logical Intelligence: The capacity for conceptual and analytical thought

and the ability to distinguish logical or numerical patterns
Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence: Well developed verbal skills and sensitivity to words'
sounds, meanings and rhythms
Musical Intelligence: The capacity to generate rhythm, pitch and timbre and to appreciate
them
Visual-Spatial Intelligence: The capacity to think in pictures and diagrams, to accurately
and abstractly imagine
Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence: The ability to control the movements of one's body and
skillfully manipulate objects
Interpersonal Intelligence: The ability to properly detect and respond to others' moods,
motives and desires
Intrapersonal Intelligence: The ability to be self-conscious and in tune with inner
impulses, values, beliefs and thought processes
Naturalist Intelligence: The ability to recognize and classify nature's plants, animals and
other objects
Existential Intelligence: The sensitivity and capacity to answer profound questions, such
as the meaning of life, about human nature.

While all individuals have some degree of intelligence, most will have more dominant
intelligences that influence how they learn and connect with the world around them.
