The Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives of the Institution

Lesson 1
Health Information System

What is an Educational Institution?

A place where learners of different ages gain education


Includes daycare, pre-schools, grade schools, intermediate, secondary, senior
high schools, colleges, and universities
Carries out educational activities based on the age grade system that provides
considerable diversity of learning milieus and learning spaces
The term “institution” commonly applies to both formal and informal institutions
that covers behavioral pattern of society and even the government and public
services.

Formal Education

Deals with the conventional classroom wherein a structured method of


learning is being administered by a governing body
Schools or other institutions are the usual places for learning
Formal education involves recognition by government in terms of offering a
curriculum, which is established using standard books and materials that are
endorsed by the academic community
Faculty and instructors follow the curricula set by a technical committee
appointed by the government
Formal education starts around the age of 4 as pre-school and usually
culminates with the learner graduating with a college or university degree
Formal education takes place in a stipulated period

Informal Education

Informal education is anything learned more independently outside of the


conventional classroom
Not restricted to any location
Usually integrates itself with the surroundings
Involves behavior skills with interaction on a daily basis as well as teacher traits
which vary by their expertise, skills and experience

Students who participate do not expect to receive any credentials but rather a
certificate of participation or completion may be issued in recognition of their
involvement in the activities

What is a Vision Statement?

A vision is the end-desire aspiration of an academic institution

A vision statement is usually a one-sentence statement describing the distinct


and motivating long-term desired transformation resulting from an institutional
program
Vision should be clear, memorable, and concise with an average length of 14
words
The shortest vision contains only three words, e.g. the vision of Human Rights
Campaign – Equality for Everyone
The longest may contain up to 26 words, e.g. the vision of Amnesty
International – A world in which every person enjoys all of human rights enshrined in the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments

What is a Mission Statement?

A mission statement is a one-sentence statement relating the intention of


your institution’s existence
This answers the question, "What you do? or Who you do this for?"
Mission must be clear by using simple language, concise, and valuable (i.e.
informed, focused, and guided)
Usually 5 to 14 words long with a maximum of 20
"Spreading Ideas" by TED
"The increase and diffusion of knowledge" by Smithsonian
"Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings
people together to build homes, community and hope" by Habitat for
Humanity

What is a Value Statement?

A value statement is a list of fundamental doctrines that guide and direct the
educational institution and its belief
This creates the moral direction of the institution and its academic community
It guides decision making and creates a yardstick against any action

The core value is the standard structure that is shared and acted upon by the
academic community
Value statements consider the following questions:
Which values are distinctive to our educational institution?
Which value should be the direction of the management of the
institution?

For an educational institution to have a useful value statement, it must


incorporate its values at all levels of the institution
Values shall give direction to their engagements, viewpoints and even decision
making
