Statement Of Purpose Guidelines

As the name signifies, the Statement of Purpose is your personal statement about who you are, what
has influenced your career path so far, your professional interests and where you plan to go from
here. The SoP is an opportunity to talk directly to the admissions committee. To make yourself stand
out from among a multitude of similarly qualified candidates. To convince the committee that you
have the spark, the thirst for knowledge that could add value to your class. SOP also increases your
chances to obtain scholarship and it could help to persuade an admissions tutor to offer you a place.
The statement of purpose shouldn’t be too long but can elaborate depending on the word limit set by
each university/ country requirements.

Some useful tips to write a SOP are mentioned below. Try to cover these points in your SOP:

1) Reason for choosing this course?


2) Briefly mention your past academic background. Details of schooling / undergrad study. Unique
achievements in academics / extracurricular activities
3) Mention about your family background only if it has been an influencing factor in your academic
career. If it is not relevant, then can be avoided.
4) Mention about all the relevant projects, dissertations and internships undertaken during period of
study. Try to relate them to the course you would pursue (if possible). Include Details of relevant
projects done / industrial visits / workshops/ any Relevant technical courses attended.
5) In case of relevant work experience, establish connection with proposed course of study.
Achievements/awards at work (if applicable)
6) Family, Hobbies, Interests, Charity work, Social / Technical Clubs, sports, etc.

7) In case, your studies would help you in your family business, highlight the scope and application of
proposed course of study in relation to the family business interests.
8) Your future plans in relevance to the course. In addition you need to explain why studying
overseas will help you to achieve your goals- Career goals - both short term and long term. Future
aim after graduation

Please follow the SoP flow given below:

• Can Start the SoP with an anecdote (means an instance) on what inspired you to opt for a
further degree in this particular program. Provide your source of motivation and whether
there is a story or incident related to it. For this purpose, you have to think back to an
important event in your life or other personal experiences that affected your academic or
professional choices. Select an appropriate story which is relevant to the theme of your
program.

• Give a background of what all that you have learnt at college, and through projects
/internships/work experience till now show your proficiency in the subjects. What has been
your learning experience as well as how it has motivated you to pursue advanced study in that
particular field.

• The SoP should have details on why you want to pursue masters in this subject and also
why at this point in time? Write the names of any research area or area of specialization of
your interest.(name them)?What skills you want to enhance through this program?

• How will an MS help you to achieve your goals? What skills do you need?

• What is your short term specific goal? How does your background lead to your STG? Means
what you want to do just after completing MS, what kind of a work profile? What kind of a
company (name them)? What kind of work do you want to do? This can be industry jobs,
research jobs or a combination of both. Also discuss what exactly you want to do in that job.

• Specific long term goal? -- Leading from your short term goal, what do you want to do in the
long term?--i.e. 10-15 years from now where do you see yourself? How do you see yourself
contributing to the industry or the world at large? You have to be very specific. (This is what
the SOP is all about-- give more technical information)

• Why this particular university? Some specific features of the university that suit your
requirements. Add names of any faculty and their research areas in this program (give names),
research labs/centres, clubs, activities, subjects in the curriculum /electives, and also the scope
of these in enhancing your profile. For giving these details you need to visit the university and
program website.

• Write a paragraph about your extracurricular activities and volunteer work. How have they
helped you to evolve and whether you feel that based on your background you can contribute
to any student organization/ program in the university?

• Conclusion - End with 2-3 lines of conclusion.
