India

Introduction

 CSR initiatives have been launched in India since the mid-
1990.

 Most big Indian corporations are engaged in some CSR


activities. As in the case of many countries, the private
sector is generally more active in this area
than the governmental/public sector.

 It is also known as corporate responsibility, corporate


citizenship responsible business, sustainable responsible
business , or corporate social performance.

 CSR typically includes issues related to business-


ethics, community-investment, environment, goverance,
human-rights, the market place & the workplace.

 Concerned about the caring the human beings & its society.

 Plays significant roles in the success & failure of the


business.

Eg: IT companies like TCS & WIPRO have developed


software to help teachers & children in schools across India
to further the cause of education.

 In India,over time, the expectations of tge public


has grown enormously with demands focusing on
poverty alleviation,tackling unemployment, fighting
inequality or forcing companies to take affirmative action.

 In India public sector companies can spend up to 5% of


their profits on CSR activities.

 Forms of CSR differ according to the country or region.

 In India, CSR has evolved to encompass


employees,customers, stakeholders& notions of
sustainable development or corporate citizenship.

 Private sector was more as compare to Govt.

 India has been ranked 2nd in global Corporate Social


Responsibility.(TNS).
 Indian firms are most transparent in terms of governance,
policies & code of conduct.

 The Indian corporate sector spent US$ 6.31 billion on social


expenditure during 2007-2008.

 Bharat Petroleum & Maruti Udyog were ranked as the best


companies in India.

 India was ranked 4th in the list, according to social


enterprise CSR Asia’s Asian Sustainability Ranking (ASR),
released in October 2009.

 Mostly CSR activities spread in 20 states & Maharashtra


gaining the most from them.

 About 36% of the CSR activities are concentrated in the


state, followed by 12 % in Gujarat, 10 % in Delhi & 9 % in

Tamil nadu.(Industry Body).

 In 2009, the government made it mandatory for all public


sector oil companies to spend 2 % of their net profits on
CSR.

 A survey conducted by the website www.indianngos.com


revealed that Tata spent Rs.1.5 billion on community
development & social services during the fiscal 2001-02 the
highest by any corporate house in India.

 Placed equal importance on maximizing financial returns as


on fulfilling its social & environmental responsibilities.
 Encouraged employees to share their skills with others &
work with community-based org’s.
 Opened hospital & rural projects in 800 villages around
Jamshedpur, spends about US$ 31.58 million as part of it’s
annual revenue expenditure.

FOR INDIAN

 Companies should spend at least 0.2% of it’s sales on CSR


activities.

guideless by publishing a separate CSR report annually.
