REPORTED SPEECH - INTERROGATIVES

Questions are of two types.

1. WH questions are information seeking questions


 He said, “When will Ritu come for dinner?”
He asked when Ritu would come for dinner.
 He said, “Why are you angry?”
He asked why I was angry
2. Yes/No questions
 He said, “Are you okay?”
He enquired if I was okay.
 He asked, “Have you done your homework?”

He asked if I had done my homework.

Change the following sentences to indirect speech:

Rule 1: Use the reporting verbs - questioned, inquired, asked.

Rule 2: For Yes/no question use if /whether after the reporting verb.

In wh- questions do not use the conjunction ‘that’ after ‘asked’.

Rule 3: Interrogative is changed into declarative.

Exercise 1:

Change the direct to Indirect speech: -

1. He said, “Who likes cheese?”


2. Raj said, “Where does he study?”
3. They said, “What are you going to do in the weekend?”
4. Savio told me, “Where shall you be the next year?”
5. He said, “Did Ravi go yesterday?”
6. Heena asked, “What does he do for a living?”
7. Seema said, “Where is my doll?”
8. Ria said, “Am I eligible for the test?”
9. He says, “Where does she live?”
10. Raju said to Kiran, “Do you like mangoes?”

Exercise 2 - Change the following into indirect form:

1. She said, “Will he participate in the quiz competition?”


 2. I said to him, “Are you feeling well?”
 3. They said to me, “Did you go to school?”
 4. He said to me, “Have you taken the breakfast?”

5. He said to me, “How are you?”

6. The teacher said to him, “What is your name?”

7. She said to him, “Why did you come late?”

8. He said, “When will they come?”

9. She asked her son, “Why are you crying?”

10. The teacher said to the students, “When will you behave well in the class?”

EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES:

Rule 1 : Reporting verbs such as wished, exclaimed, praised, prayed, blessed, cried
etc are used.
Rule 2: The sign of exclamation is omitted.
Rule 3: The words of exclamation like alas, hurrah are omitted.
 He said, “May you live long.”
He wished that he might live long.
 “What a clever fellow you are!”, the boy said.
The boy exclaimed that he was a clever fellow.
Exercise:
1. Rani said, “Bravo! You have played well.”
2. “Happy New year,” said Jinu to Minu.
3. “Alas! I lost my best gold chain,” said Rani to her friend.
4. “What a tragedy it is!” said he.
5. “May God bless you for your kindness!”, said the poor boy to his master.
6. He said, “Yuck! I hate to visit this place.”
7. Raju said to the teacher, “Hurrah! We have clinched the trophy.”
8. The soldier said, “Alas! Our enemies are strong.”
9. My father said, “How smart you are!”
10. Rihan said, “What a fool are you!”
