NCE 2104: Statics of Rigid Bodies

Problem Set No. 4

Instructions: Solve the following problems. Show your complete solutions including the
necessary free-body diagrams in a separate sheet of paper.

I. Method of Joints
1. The portion of truss shown represents the upper part of a power transmission
line tower. For the given loading, determine the force in each of the members
located above HJ. State whether each member is in tension or compression.

2. The truss shown in figure is pin connected only at the lettered joints. Find the
force acting in each member.
3. Determine the force in each bar of the truss shown in the figure in terms of P.

4. Find the force in members AB, AC, BC, CD and CE for the truss shown, if each
load P = 1500 lb and each Q = 2500 lb
II. Zero-Force Member
1. Using the method of joints, indicate all the members of the truss shown in figure
that have zero force

III. Method of Sections

1. Find the forces in members EF, KL, and GL for the Fink truss shown

2. The roof truss shown in Figure is pinned at point A, and supported by a roller
at point H. Determine the force in member DG and DF.
3. The weight of the bucket is The cable passes over pulleys at A and D.
Determine the axial forces in members IK and JL

4. Determine the force in members NO, KE and KD.

IV. Frames
1. The wall crane supports a load of 700
lb. Determine the horizontal and
vertical components of reaction at the
pins A and D. Also, what is the force
in the cable at the winch W? The jib
ABC has a weight of 100 lb and
member BD has a weight of 40 lb.
Each member is uniform and has a
center of gravity at its center.

2. Find the reaction at hinge A, rollers B and D.
