Create a Survey and Retrieve the Data

Surveys allow you to solicit feedback from learners.

Create A Survey
 From the course navigation bar, click Course Tools and select Surveys from the
drop-down.

 Click New Survey.

 From the Properties tab, enter a name for the survey and modify the instant
feedback and anonymity settings as desired.

 Click Add/Edit Questions to begin adding questions to the survey.

 Click New to create new questions or click Import if the questions already exist in the
Question Library.

 When you have finished adding questions, click Done Editing Questions near the top-
right.

 Click the Restrictions tab to modify the survey’s availability.

PLEASE NOTE: ‘Hide from Users’ will be checked by default. This must be
unchecked when you are ready to make the survey visible to users. A survey must be
visible for the availability dates to take effect. When the survey is visible but it is outside
of the timeframe established by the start and end dates, students will see the survey
exists, but will not be able to engage with it.

 From the Restrictions tab, you can also add release conditions, modify the number of
attempts students have, and grant students special access.

 When finished, click Save and Close. To preview the survey, click the drop-down
icon to the right of the survey name and select Preview from the drop-down.

Add The Survey To A Content Module


The Surveys area under Course Tools lists all of the surveys in the course. You can insert them
into any Content module to list them with related content.

 From the course navigation bar, click Content and navigate to the module location
where the survey should reside.

 Click Existing Activities and select Surveys from the drop-down.

 Locate and click the survey you would like to insert.

Retrieve The Survey Data
Survey data can be viewed/retrieved in multiple formats.

 From the course navigation bar, click Course Tools and select Surveys from the
drop-down.

 Click the drop-down icon to the right of the survey name and select Statistics from
the drop-down. This will enable you to view submissions individually by student.

 If you would like to export the data in a spreadsheet format, click the name of the
survey, click the Reports Setup tab, and then click Add Report.

 A survey report enables you to choose how to export the data. D2L describes the two
report types as:

 “Summary Report - You can display aggregate data for multiple choice, true and
false, Likert, multi-select, and matching question types. You can also display text
responses for written response, short answer, and fill in the blanks question
types.

 Individual Attempts - This report displays each attempt individually. You can
choose to hide the user’s first and last name when the Individual
Attempts report is viewed.”

 Customize the report how you would like. Under the Release Report To section, be
sure to select Instructor and any other roles that should be able to access this report
(i.e. Teaching Assistant, Grader, etc.).

 Click Save when finished. Then click Save and Close.

 Click the drop-down icon to the right of the survey name and select Reports from the
drop-down.

 Click the name of the report you just created and click Generate HTML.

 Near the top-right, select the file format you wish to download.
