HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY BASED LEARNING MATERIAL
You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills covered in
this learner's guide because you have:
been working for some time
already completed training in this area.
If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a particular
skill or skills, talk to him/her about having them formally recognized so you
don't have to do the same training again. If you have a qualification or
Certificate of Competency from previous trainings, show it to your trainer. If the
skills you acquired are still current and relevant to the unit/s of competency
they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If you are not
sure about the currency of your skills, discuss this with your trainer.
This module was prepared to help you achieve the required competency, in
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Servicing NC - II. This will be the source
of information for you to acquire knowledge and skills in this particular trade
independently and at your own pace, with minimum supervision or help from
your instructor.
Work through all the information and complete the activities in each section.
Read information sheets and complete the self-check. Suggested references
are included to supplement the materials provided in this module.
Most probably your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager. He/she
is there to support you and show you the correct way to do things.
Your trainer will tell you about the important things you need to consider
when you are completing activities and it is important that you listen and
take notes.
You will be given plenty of opportunity to ask questions and practice on the
job. Make sure you practice your new skills during regular work shifts. This
way you will improve both your speed and memory and also your confidence.
Use the self-check questions at the end of each section to test your own
progress.
When you are ready, ask your trainer to watch you perform the activities
outlined in this module.
As you work through the activities, ask for written feedback on your
progress. Your trainer keeps feedback/ pre-assessment reports for this
reason. When you have successfully completed each element, ask your
trainer to mark on the reports that you are ready for assessment.
When you have completed this module (or several modules), and feel
confident that you have had sufficient practice, your trainer will arrange an
appointment with registered assessor to assess you. The results of your
assessment will be recorded in your competency Achievement Record.

Air conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR) copper pipe and fittings are
manufactured specifically for use in refrigeration systems.
ACR pipe is thoroughly cleaned, dried, capped and sometimes charged with
nitrogen to help prevent contamination of the refrigeration system.
The size of ACR pipe is expressed by its outside diameter while copper used for
general plumbing is expressed in terms of its inside diameter.
Air conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR) copper pipe and fittings are
manufactured specifically for use in refrigeration systems. ACR pipe is
thoroughly cleaned, dried, capped and sometimes charged with nitrogen to help
prevent contamination of the refrigeration system.
The size of ACR pipe is expressed by its outside diameter while copper used for
general plumbing is expressed in terms of its inside diameter.
ACR copper tubing is made in both soft and hard forms. Both are classified by
their wall thickness. Type L (medium wall) is used under normal conditions.
Type K (Heavy wall) is used where severe corrosion may occur The O.D. of both
type is the same.
Soft ACR copper tubing made in sizes from 1/8-inch to 7/8-inch O.D. and
supplied in 50 foot rolls is typically used in air conditioning installations.
Because of its length, soft copper tubing needs fewer connections, reducing
the chance of leaks. It is easily bent or shaped, but must be held in place by
clamps or other hardware as it cannot support its own weight.
Hard copper ACR pipe comes in 20-foot lengths and similar sizes to soft copper
tubing. It is designed to be used with fittings such as elbows and tees to make
necessary bends or change in direction. Joints and connections are made by
soldering or brazing.
ACR copper tubing and fittings must be kept clean and dry to prevent system
contamination. Piping and fittings should remain capped and stored in a clean
place just before installation.
When Unrolling soft copper tubing, good practice is to place the roll upright on a
flat surface and unroll the tubing. Do not lay the coil flat and uncoil the tubing
from the side of the roll. Do not bend or straighten the tubing more than
necessary, because this will cause it to harden.
This is a strong type of tubing that is very resistant to corrosion. It is also easily
connected to fitting by either flaring or brazing because of this qualities,
stainless steel is often required in food processing, ice, oven, manufacture, milk
handling system, and similar works
Steel Tubing:
This is a thin wall tubing used in refrigeration and air conditioning work, Its
size is practically the same as that of copper tubing, hence connections may be
made on steel tubing by using either flare joints or silver brazed joints.
It is usually used for evaporating units in air conditioning for home and auto-
mobile. Commonly, it is used for evaporator (freezer) of the domestic
refrigerators. Special type of treatment for soldering or brazing is needed.
Plastic Tubing:
This type of tubing with polyethylene is one of the most common substances
used in the manufacture of plastic tubing. The usual safe temperature is from
100 degrees centigrade (oC) to +175 degrees centigrade (oC) you should never
use this tubing where fluid temperature goes beyond this limit. Polyethylene
tubing is not used in refrigerating mechanism but in cold water lines in water
cooled condensers.

Used for cutting wire and holding flat and round stock.
d.Diagonal pliers;
Used for cutting medium or fine wires.
Used for bending small pieces of soft metal.
Wire Stripper:
Hammer:
Classified either as soft or hard faces. The cylindrical shape head
hammer has a hard face for striking hard objects like cold chisel, star drill,
and nails. The cylindrical shaped soft face hammer is made of plastic or
hand rubber used in rewinding job.
C. Plastic hammer:
Used for rewinding jobs like forming coils, assembly and disassembly
of motors.
