Listening and Speaking are both essential in the educational sector as they are considered as part of
the Five Macro Skills. As language teachers, it is our responsibility to help our students’ master these
skills so they could do better and actively participate in class. Thus, teachers should have tons of
strategies to help learners maximize their listening and speaking skills especially in times of distance
learning.
In this regard, the proponent thought of conducting a Learning Action Cell (LAC) on “Strengthening
Students’ Speaking and Listening Skills through Effective Teaching Strategies in the New Normal ”
to enhance teachers’ skills in teaching speaking and listening to students.
The LAC geared at modelling a comprehensive selection of effective teaching strategies that promote
learner achievement in literacy and numeracy ; and leading colleagues in reviewing, modifying and
expanding the range of teaching strategies that promote critical and creative thinking, as well as other
higher-order thinking skills.
The LAC was steered on August 05-07, 2021 via Google Meet application.
The session was organized by the Language teachers spearheaded by the LAC leader Mrs. Corazon T.
Custodio, Master Teacher I.
The first day of the session was started at exactly 9:00 in the morning. It began with the roll call of
attendees and giving of house rules by the moderator , Ms. Felisa Bacani. It was to make sure that
everyone was in call. Then, Mrs. Maribel A. Cauan,Teacher III, led the singing of the national anthem
succeeded by a prayer. After which, Mrs. Eva L. Caronan, Head Teacher I, recognized in her opening
remarks the participation and collaboration of the teachers in making the training possible. Likewise,
Mrs. Corazon T. Custodio, MTI, emphasized in her welcome address the importance of the topics
discussed and the significance of using new teaching strategies during this pandemic.
The first discussant was Mr. Rodrigo G. Naron, Teacher III, who talked about Teaching Speaking
Skills to 21st Century Learners. He started his lecture with a Pre-Test to give the participants a bird’s
eye view of the topic. He reinvigorated that communication today is very important both in the
