(9) Tiffany writes all the numbers from 8 to 160, which are divisible by 8. What will be the
number at the 14th position?
(10) The following pictograph shows the number of printers manufactured in 6 factories.
Factory Printers ( = 5 printers)
Solutions
(1) b. 12:17
Step 1
As, Ethan's toy car can travel 72 meters in a minute, therefore the speed of the Ethan's
toy car = 72 meters per minute
Step 2
Caleb's toy car travels in an hour = 6.12 kilometers
We know that 1 kilometer = 1000 meters
Therefore, 6.12 kilometers = 6.12 × 1000 meters = 6120 meters
Also, 1 hour = 60 minutes
Therefore, Caleb's toy car travels in 60 minutes = 6120 meters
6120
Or, Caleb's toy car travels in 1 minute = meters = 102 meters
60
Therefore, the speed of the Caleb's toy car is 102 meters per minute
Step 3
72 12
Fraction of the speed of the cars belonging to Ethan and Caleb = =
102 17
Step 4
Therefore, the ratio of the speeds of the cars belonging to Ethan and Caleb is 12:17.
Step 5
Hence, option b is the correct answer.
(2) c. $185.28
Step 1
Let us assume that the total salary of the man is x.
12
12% of his salary = x ×
100
12x
=
100
Step 2
Since, he lost 12% of his salary,
12x
remaining salary of the man = x −
100
100x − 12x
=
100
88x
=
100
88x 88x 8
Now, 8% of = ×
100 100 100
704x
=
10000
Step 3
According to the question, the total salary of the man is equal to the sum of 12%
of his salary, 8% of the remaining salary and 150.
12x 704x
x= + + 150
100 10000
100 × 12x + 704x + 10000 × 150
⇒x=
10000
1200x + 704x + 1500000
⇒x=
10000
1904x + 1500000
⇒x=
10000
By cross multiplying both sides,
⇒ 10000x = 1904x + 1500000
⇒ 10000x − 1904x = 1500000
⇒ 8096x = 1500000
1500000
⇒x=
8096
⇒ x = 185.28

(3) a. 5
Step 1
Let us first replace the operators in the expression with their new meanings:
÷=×
-=÷
+=-
×=+
The new expression then becomes:
2 × 68 ÷ 17 - 4 + 1
Step 2
The expression 2 × 68 ÷ 17 - 4 + 1 has four operators: divide, multiply, add and
subtract. Remember, we should do operations in the following order:
Divide
Multiply
Add
Subtract
Step 3
Let us first do division. Since 68 ÷ 17 = 4, the expression becomes:
2×4-4+1
Step 4
Let us now do multiplication. Since 2 × 4 = 8, the expression now becomes:
8-4+1
Step 5
Let us now do addition. Since 8 + 1 = 9, the expression now becomes:
9-4
Step 6
Let us now do subtraction: 9 - 4 = 5
Our answer is 5.
(4) d. Saturday
Step 1
It is given that today is Friday. Therefore, the day after tomorrow will be Sunday.
Step 2
As, my brother's birthday is on Sunday, Christmas will also be on Sunday (the next
Sunday).
Step 3
Therefore, the day before Christmas will be Saturday.
Step 1
Let us check the left hand side and the right hand side of every option individually.
Step 2
Options a: LHS = 900 + 82 = 982
RHS = 902 + 80 = 982
Here, LHS is equal to RHS.
Step 3
Options b: LHS = 900 + 82 = 982
RHS = 908 + 2 = 910
Here, LHS is not equal to RHS.
Step 4
Options c: LHS = 900 + 82 = 982
RHS = 920 + 8 = 928
Here, LHS is not equal to RHS.
Step 5
Options d: LHS = 900 + 82 = 982
RHS = 90 + 82 = 172
Here, LHS is not equal to RHS.
Step 6
Hence, option a is the correct option.
(6) 30
Step 1
The ratio of Nur's and Joshua's age is 2 : 5.
Let us suppose that the age of Nur is 2x, then the age of Joshua is 5x.
Step 2
Since, the sum of their ages is 42 years,
2x + 5x = 42
7x = 42
42
x = = 6
7
Step 3
Thus, the age of Joshua is
= 5x
= 5 × 6 [ Put x = 6]
= 30 years
(7) 6
Step 1
The frog first climbs up by 3 m, and falls back by 2 m. On the first day it climbs, 3 -
2 = 1 m.
Step 2
In the next few days that follow, it climbs up the same height. We can understand
that for the first 5 days it will climb up 5 × 1 = 5 m.
Step 3
The next day when it climbs up by 3 m, it will come out of the ditch since 5 + 3 = 8
m. Once it comes out of the ditch, there is no question of falling back by 2 meter
on the last day. Hence, it reaches the top in 6 days.
(8) 8.88
Step 1
In order to do the given division, we will cancel the decimals first.
0.6216 62.16
Therefore, =
0.07 7
Step 2
Now, simply dividing the given fraction, we get 8.88 as the answer.
(9) 112
Step 1
Numbers which are divisible by 8, will be in form 1×8, 2×8, 3×8, 4×8, ...
Step 2
Since the numbers start from 8, the number at the 14th position will be = 14 × 8
= 112
(10) (a) 1
(b) 4
(c) 185
Step 1
Step 2
(a) Therefore, the factory which manufactures the maximum number of printers:
1.
(b) The factory which manufactures the minimum number of printers: 4.
(c) Total number of printers manufactured by all the factories in a day = 45 + 35
+ 35 + 10 + 30 + 30 = 185 printers
