5.

0 Limitations
 Parallax error could occur when reading the dial gauge.
 The soil sample prepared might not be fully saturated because there could be the presence
of bubbles in the voids between the soil particles.
 Friction could occur between the soil and the consolidation ring which might reduce the
mean stress of the soil.
 Since the experimental procedures were so long, disruption of apparatus was
unavoidable.
 The soil sample that was given to us was a disturbed one.

6.0 Recommendations
 Parallax error should be avoided by making our line of sight parallel to the reading in the
dial gauge.
 Extreme care should be taken in handling and trimming the clay sample.
 The consolidation ring should be coated with silicone grease to reduce friction.
 The instrument can be connected to a computer to obtain accurate readings that is
settlement at any time.
 Undisturbed soil sample should be provided for experiment.

7.0 Applications
 The oedometer test can be used to measure soil characteristics which provide information
to geologists to study soil history. This test will display a variety of results of newly
deposited soils against older soils. Land will compress naturally over time and where
lakes are no longer present will cause further soil compression.
 It can also be used to determine acceptable load factors when foundation of buildings are
being constructed. For example, if construction takes place on soil where majority of
water are present, swelling can occur if the load has not completely compressed the soil.
These changes in the conditions of the soil could damage foundations, so it is important
study the soil behavior if loads are removed or added.
 It also gives data on differential settlement to structural engineer and hence precautions
can be taken from the start.
