Engineering Career planning:
1. How to Become an Engineer
To get an entry-level job, you will need a
bachelor's degree in engineering. Sometimes a
college degree in physical science
or mathematics will suffice, especially in high-
demand specialties. Some students specialize
in a particular branch of engineering, but then
work in a related one.

You will have to get a state-issued license if you

want to offer your services directly to the public.
Doing this will allow you to be called a Professional Engineer (PE). To become
licensed, your college degree must come from a program that is accredited by
the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

2. Self-assessment

The better you know yourself, the better your choices will be. Knowing your
personality, interests, values and skills will help you identify the jobs and businesses
as well as personal and professional career goals best suited to your dreams. A self-
assessment can also help you identify any knowledge and/or skills you might need to
acquire, or the personal qualities you might need to achieve your career goals.

3. .Set your goals

If you are yet to decide on your career goals, look forward two years from now; what
do you want to be doing in two years' time? What about in five and ten years’ time?
This will help break down the sometimes-scary career path and planning into
manageable pieces.

Setting SMART goals is an effective way to help you achieve your goals:

 Specific: be clear about what you want to achieve

 Measurable: define a physical way that helps you see you’ve achieved your
goal
 Achievable: don’t set yourself up to fail; make your goal attainable
 Relevant: make sure the goal matters to you
 Time bound: setting a deadline ensures your goal isn’t left unactioned and
forgotten.

4. What Soft Skills You Need

In addition to your education and an aptitude for math and science, you also
need specific soft skills, or personal qualities, to succeed in this occupation.

 Active Listening and Verbal Communication: These communication skills

are essential for working on teams, which will be a significant part of your
job.
 Critical Thinking: You will need to use logic when testing products and
solving problems.
 Reading Comprehension: You must have the ability to understand written
documentation.
 Active Learning: You must be able to incorporate new findings into your
work.
how to use math in  engineering.?
Engineering Puts Math in a Real-World Context
On the other hand, making careful measurements is
what real engineers do all the time! The kids in
the video self-identify as aerospace engineers as they
work on the unit A Long Way Down: Designing
Parachutes. They’ve designed, built, and tested their
parachutes with a clear goal in mind: to make a
parachute that drops a payload as slowly and gently as
possible.

Measure, Calculate, Round Up, and

More
For example, to figure out whether their parachute is small enough to fit on board a spacecraft, kids
calculate a “packing score.” They use stopwatches to measure how long it takes their parachutes to
fall. And they calculate “average drop speed” in feet per second—calling on their knowledge of
decimal notation to report their results.
