COMMON GRAMMAR ERRORS

1) SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT

EXAMPLE: a) The man, as well as his wife, were given a prescription by the doctor. X
b) The man, as well as his wife, was given a prescription by the doctor. √
c) The teacher collect the assignment from students. X
d) The teacher collects the assignment from students. √

2) DOUBLE NEGATIVES

EXAMPLE: a) They don’t do nothing. X


b) They don’t do anything. √
c) We never get nothing. X
d) We never get anything.√

3) Between/among

EXAMPLE a) The three people divided the money between themselves. X


b) The three people divided the money among themselves. √

4) Their / there
EXAMPLE a) There money was seized from the government. X
b) Their money was seized from the government. √

5) Well (adverb)/ good (adjective)


EXAMPLE a) He plays good. X
b) He plays well. √
c) I feel good. √
d) I feel well. √

6) Past tense consistency


EXAMPLE a) The thunder rumbled, and lightning flash across the sky. X
b) The thunder rumbled, and lightning flashed across the sky. √
c) The students were chase by a dog. X
d) The students were chased by a dog. √

7) Comparative and Superlative Adjectives
Comparative – er (for two things)
Superlative – est (for more than two)
Some adjectives use more and most
Exceptions are bad worse worst

She was happier than me. √

8) Subject and Object Pronouns


EXAMPLE: 1. We shouted at she to get away from there.x
