Etymology of Baptism
The term “Baptism” originates from the Greek word Baptismos or Baptizein, meaning
“Immersion,”

Catechism of the Catholic Church

”Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit… and the
door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and
reborn from as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church
and made sharers in her mission: ‘Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in
the word’ (CCC 1213)
”The body is washed so that the soul may be cleansed, the body is anointed so that the soul may
be made holy, the body is marked by the sign of the cross so that the soul may be
strengthened…” Tertullian (Early Church Father)
Through the Gospel of St. Matthew the formula was said “I baptize you in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)
-In the fourth century infant baptism stated to be observed.
“The sign of the cross… marks with the imprint OF Christ the one who is going to belong to him
and signifies the grace of the redemption of Christ won for us by his cross.” (CCC 1235)
“Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you” (Matthew
28:19-20).
The Baptismal Character is the spiritual and indelible seal impressed upon the soul by the
anointing with Chrism, which consecrates the neophytes to Christ. Being permanent, the three
Sacraments imparting the Character can neither be repeated nor deleted.
