Department of Instrumentation Engineering

Innovations by the Faculty in Teaching and Learning

 Describe the process followed to improve quality of Teaching & Learning

A. Adherence to the Academic calendar

The academic activities are planned according to the Institute academic calendar. The
department quality assurance (DQA) committee maps the resources and the timetable
committee schedules the lectures. A sample of the academic calendar is shown below:

Figure 1: Academic calendar of the odd-sem year 2017-18.

B. Use of various instructional methods using pedagogical initiatives:

The faculty members prepare lesson plans, presentations, and make available
course materials for the allocated subjects and also upload it to the online portal
“Learning Management System” (LMS) enabling the easy access of the content
for the student. A screenshot of the LMS portal is shown below.

 Instructional delivery

o In order to make teaching and learning process more effective, the subject
teacher is taking care of prescribed time available for the corresponding
semester in accordance with academic calendar.
o The theory lectures and practicals are planned by the faculty as per the
weightage of the topics allotted in curriculum design.
o The handouts are given to the students before delivering the lectures so that
students come for the lecture with the prerequisite knowledge about the
topic.
o The subject teacher makes the connection between theory classes and
practicals in way that the student can understand the application of theoretical
concept in real world situation.
o ICT facilities described above are effectively used for delivering content.

All the faculties are highly qualified with mixed of rich experience in academics
& industry. The Faculties are also promoted to undergo the professional trainings
in order to make the teaching and learning process more classical with latest
trends in the corresponding subject area. The details of innovations by the faculty
members in Instructional delivery are shown in table 1.

delivering the lectures by defining the proper lesson plan for the
subjet.
Presentations are delivered using modern tools like ICT and
Smart boards, and covered with models, simulations and

animation to enhance the concepts more effectively to the
students. Presentations are always followed by the discussions
based on the topic taught thus improving communication skills
of students.
Practical demonstration of applicability of theoretical concept in
real world is given through program execution, charts,
Demonstrations monograms and videos. Students are engaged completely for
assigned lab hours. Demonstrations strengthen the lifelong
learning capability of students.
Webinars are engaged for students to cover the contents beyond

the syllabus.
Group discussions are useful for students in order to analyze the
understanding about the concept regarding subject. Also group
Group discussions are learning and sharing information which covers

explicitly marked during discussions. Students are trained to
tolerate the opinions of others.

C. Methodologies to support weak students and encourage bright students:

Based on the previous semester performance of the students and their
performance in the pre-requisite tests, the class counselor and the mentors
identify the weak and the bright students. Students obtaining percentile over
75 are considered as bright students and below 35 percentile are considered
as weak students. The weakly performing students are given specific
guidelines on how to approach the difficult subject, a rigorous doubt solving
session is engaged.

i. Methodologies to encourage bright students:

The students with advanced skills are identified based on their
performance in pre-requisite tests, assignments, term test results, and
projects and practical work undertaken. Such students are encouraged to
appear for competitive exams such as GATE, CAT, IES, Indian Navy
entrance exam etc. Advanced learners are groomed to present papers in
technical paper presentations, seminars, and workshops. They are also
motivated to take participation in off-campus technical events organized
by eminent institutes.

D. Methodologies to support weak students and encourage bright students:

 Asessment and Evaluation

Apart from regular term test and traditional approach department use number of
technological based approach for assessment of students and quality teaching.
Institute has special QMS team to plane, implement and review various qualities
teaching strategy. The teacher asks students to use technology to complete
assignments that ask for problem solving and creativity on a regular basis.
Digital Course file (DCF) which keep records of all attendance, lab practical,
Assignment and test marks and termwork are calculated based on this. Table 2
shows different innovation in assessment and evaluation.

Impact observed

i. The impact of the above activities is reflected on the performance and

attendance of the students as well as the practical knowledge of students is
enhanced.
ii. Improved performance in Internal & University examinations.
iii. Improvement in analytical abilities of students thus improves the placement.
iv. Improvement in the attendance of students in each class is observed by
individual teacher.
v. Based on the feedback from the students better interaction between students
and faculty has been observed.

E. Quality of Class Room teaching

All classrooms are equipped with LCD projector and ICT set ups. Some of
the classrooms are provided with air conditioning systems.

F. Coduct of experiments

All laboratories are well equipped with experimental setups and new kits are
added to the laboratory whenever the university syllabus and list of experiments
are updated. Fig shows an actual setup of temperature control loop under
development in DCS lab (011B).

Each batch is divided into groups of 3-4 students. 4-5 experimental set ups
prepared at a time. Instructor explains theoretical and practical aspects to all the
groups and they are kept in rotation. Students get printed lab manuals prior so that
they can study thoroughly before performing the experiment. Each experiment is
explained in detail, so that students can get good understanding.

An appropriate weightage is given to each analysis and their mapping as for the
COs is done and it is guaranteed that all COs are achieved. The same is reflected
in Fig. 21. Printed lab manuals are given to students well in advance so that they
can understand it.

G. Continuous Assessment in the Laboratry

Figure 21: Printed Lab Manual

16
Department of Instrumentation Engineering

Continuous assessment in the laboratory for each experiment is performed, i.e. the
write-up of an experiment performed during previous week is assessed for its
correctness during the next week. While checking the write-up, a mock oral of the
student is conducted and appropriate grade is assigned. The same is reflected in Fig 22

H. Student feedback on teaching-learning process and action was taken

The feedback given by students at the end of each semester on the CO attainment
and on the performance of the faculty is analyzed by HOD, DQA and CMQA
teams to bring in modifications to curriculum handling regarding quality, content
and delivery mechanisms.

Action taken

Based on the feedback provided by the students, the faculty concerned is

counseled for improving their performance through written feedback by CMQA,
thus ensuring shortcomings are overcome before they go the next class.

 Quality of internal semester question papers, assignments, and evaluation

The department has a well-defined procedure to check the quality of question

papers, assignments, and evaluation. The evaluation ends with attainment of all
COs as shown in Fig 28.

B. Prcess to ensure questions from outcomes/learning levels perspective

Quality verification of term test is carried out in line with coverage of all COs,
template of the paper, quality of the questions and weightage of the allocated
marks. The same is reflected in Fig 31.

C. Evidendence of COs coverage in class test/ mid-term test

A DCF file includes entries of question-wise marks obtained by students in
term tests and their linkage with COs. The enables computation of CO
attainment in term test. The same is manifested in Figure 33 and 34.

D. Quality of Assignment and its relevance to COs

Assignments are prepared in line with the coverage of syllabus and COs. A DCF
file maintains the record of question-wise marks obtained by each student in the
assignment where in each question is linked with an appropriate CO. This enables
calculation of CO attainement through assignments. It is shown in Figure- Figure.
