Textiles and Design Major Textiles Project Marking Guidelines

The Marking Guidelines for Textiles and Design Major Textiles Projects (MTPs) are published by the Board of Studies, Teaching
and Educational Standards NSW (BOSTES) at http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_hsc/textiles-design.html
Markers use this convenient back-to-back page layout of the marking guidelines as their marking scheme during the marking operation. The
mark ranges at the top of each column are used as a guide, and are supplemented by other briefing materials provided during the marker
training period, including images of benchmark works. All Textiles and Design MTPs are assessed by two markers who have experience in the
subject and have been trained in applying the marking guidelines. During marking, all markers are closely monitored by their Senior Marker,
the Supervisor of Marking and BOSTES officers. It is important to note that markers use a holistic approach to marking an MTP where an on-
balance view of achievement is reached using the guidelines.
Schools are reminded that the use of these criteria to assess work at school is not appropriate. The progress of the MTP should be assessed
in other valid ways, such as oral presentations or reports on progress linked to other syllabus outcomes.

The following extract from the Glossary of Key Words is provided to assist.
Analyse: identify components and the relationship between them, draw out and relate implications. Apply: use, utilise, employ in a particular situation.
Clarify: make clear or plain. Demonstrate: show by example. Describe: provide characteristics and features. Evaluate: make a judgement based on
criteria; determine the value of. Explain: Relate cause and effect; make the relationships between things evident; provide why and/or how. Critically
analyse: add a degree or level of accuracy depth, knowledge and understanding, logic, questioning, reflection and quality to analyse. Identify:
recognise and name. Interpret: draw meaning from. Justify: support an argument or conclusion. Outline: sketch in general terms; indicate the main
features of.

Aim
Textiles and Design Stage 6 is designed to enable students to understand and appreciate the nature and significance of textiles and to develop confidence and
competence in the selection, design, manufacture and application of textile items.

Objectives
Students will develop:

1. knowledge and understanding of the functional and aesthetic requirements of textiles for a range of applications
2. practical skills in design and manipulation of textiles through the use of appropriate technologies
3. the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of the properties and performance of textiles to the development and manufacture of textile items
4. skills in experimentation, critical analysis and the discriminatory selection of textiles for specific end-uses
5. knowledge and understanding of Australian Textile, Clothing, Footwear and Allied Industries
6. an appreciation of the significance of textiles in society.

Course Structure
Textiles and Design Stage 6 has a Preliminary course and an HSC course each of 120 indicative hours and consisting of Design, Properties and Performance of
Textiles and Australian Textile, Clothing, Footwear and Allied Industries. The Preliminary course also includes a minimum of two Textiles Projects. The HSC course
includes the development, management, communication and manufacture of an MTP. Students select one focus area through which they develop a project, which
includes supporting documentation and textile item/s: apparel, furnishings, costume, textile arts, non-apparel.
Students will demonstrate the development of manipulative, graphical, communication, research, decision-making, management and manufacturing skills
