Face-to-Face Reading Collaborative Unit

Topic: Character Traits

Collaborating Teacher: Ms. Alexis Berry-Hawkins

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Needs Assessment:

1. Based off observations Ms. Berry-Hawkins suggested doing a unit on character traits for her

students. This is a third grade standard that students always struggle with. Students tend to get

traits and emotions mixed up.

Learner Analysis:

The class I will be using for this collaborative unit is Ms. Berry-Hawkins 3rd grade class at Pearl

Stephens Elementary School. Ms. Berry-Hawkins class has 20 students. There are 13 males and 7

females in the class. There are 13 African-American students, three caucasian students, three

multi-racial students, and one hispanic student. Six students receive IEP services. Two students

receive speech services. One student has a 504. One student is repeating third grade.

Instructional Goals:

1. Students will be able to explain the difference between a physical and personality trait.

2. Students will be able describe characters using personality and physical trait text examples.

3. Students will be able to describe characters in a story using personality and physical trait text

examples.

Assessment Plan:

1. Background knowledge: see what students already know about character traits

2. Formative: Students will explain the difference between a physical trait and a personality trait on

a padlet.

3. Formative: Students will practice finding physical and personality traits in passages.

4. Formative: Students will complete the graphic organizer for character traits.
Content Outline:

● Pre-instruction: To gain a sense of students’ background knowledge on character traits students

will be asked what they already know about character traits.
