Norms

Norms are a fundamental concept in the social sciences. They are most commonly
defined as rules or expectations that are socially enforced. Norms may be prescriptive
(encouraging positive behavior; for example, “be honest”) or proscriptive (discouraging
negative behavior; for example, “do not cheat”).

Mores

Mores are social norms that are widely observed within a particular society or culture.
Mores determine what is considered morally acceptable or unacceptable within any given
culture.

Folkways

Folkways are behaviors that are learned and shared by a social group that we often refer
to as “customs” in a group that are not morally significant, but they can be important for
social acceptance.

Rules

A rule is a statement telling people what they should do in order to achieve success or a
benefit of some kind.

Rules are instructions that tell you what you are allowed to do and what you are not
allowed to do.

Laws

Law is a system of rules created and enforced through social or governmental institutions
to regulate behavior, with its precise definition a matter of longstanding debate.
