Steel and Timber Design

Activity No. 1

Instruction: Write your complete solution on any piece of paper. Box your final answer with
RED/BLUE ink.

1. The 200mm x 150mm x 12.5mm angle has one line of 20mm diameter bolts in each leg.
The bolts are 75mm on center in each line and are staggered 37.5mm with respect to each
other. F y =248 MPa , F u=400 MPa . Standard nominal hole diameter of 20mm bolt is
21mm. Area of angular section = 4,355mm^2.

a. Compute
the net area
of the given
section.
b. Compute
the
effective
area if the reduction coefficient is 0.75.
c. Compute the maximum allowable tensile load that the section could carry.

2. From the bolted connection shown in figure, the steel plates which is 275mm x 12mm is
connected by bolts having diameter of hole equal to 2mm greater than the 25mm
diameter bolts. A36 steel is used with F y =248 MPa , F u=400 MPa .
a. Compute the shear capacity of the joint if the connection is of bearing type using
A490 bolts with threads excluded from shear with an allowable shearing stress
F v =276 MPa .
b. Compute the bearing capacity of the joint.
c. Compute the horizontal spacing (pitch) of rivets which will cause the strength of
the plates to be equal to the strength of rivets. Assume Ae = A n

3. A splice plate shown in the accompanying figure consists of a 250mm x 10mm steel plate
with 5 rivets having diameter of holes to be 20mm. A36 is specified with
F y =248.8 MPa . Minimum tensile strength F u=400 MPa.
a. Compute the effective net area
b. Compute the value of T based on gross area
c. Compute the value of T based on effective net area.
