DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION

INTRODUCTION - CHARACTERISTICS

The Zalkin company thanks you for your confidence in choosing the sealing Head. The head has
been designed to meet the closure and seal requirements of caps with pilferproof ring.

This manual will enable you to take control of the equipment quickly and efficiently.

• Safety Information :
- Three types of information panels are used in the manual. They draw users' attention to the risks arising from failure
to follow the recommendations they described.

Warning : Failure to follow appropriate precautions may lead to death or

serious injury and/or severe damage to property.

Caution : Failure to follow appropriate precautions may lead to minor injury

and/or damage to property.

Remark : Important information on the machine or a section of the Manual

calling for special attention.

- Some operations are to be performed by suitably trained and qualified persons. They are highlighted with
the heading "Qualified Personnel." Qualified personnel means persons who have the appropriate vocational
training and have passed the relevant qualification and/or accreditation tests.

- The head forms an integral part of the moving parts of the machine: access to the head must be dependent on the
opening of the guard causing an emergency stop.

• Components :
The sealing head can operate with «pilferproof» type metal caps which may or may not require a «reformed»
zone.
Original cap Cap with reformed

BEFORE AFTER

Reforming is generally used for glass bottles with positive or negative internal pressure. It improves the seal on
the bottle neck for greater resistance to the internal or external pressure.

Remark : Please contact us for an another type of cap.

SETTINGS

A - VERTICAL COMPRESSION FORCE

* The vertical compression force depends on cap type .

30 x 60 STELCAP caps require a vertical compression force

from 130 to 150 kg.
X
The force is adjusted by changing the four vertical pressure springs
(different colours for different pressures).

The spring adjustment producting the head pressure can be checked by measuring
the length of four springs with no bottle in the capper.

The actual spring length « X », not including washers, should be

approximately 51 mm.

Caution : The 4 springs must be adjusted at the same length.

* Verification of spring stress on load

The distance « Y » between the lower surface of the upper part

of the sealing head and the upper surface of the arm carrier must Y
be checked when the head is applying a cap to a bottle
at the lowest point of the main cam.
The actual length « Y » should be 133 mm.

For a PET bottle, the distance must be equal to 135 mm.

But it should be stressed that the considered bottle

must be of the nominal height indicated on the glassmaker’s drawing.
The sealing head can easily deal with bottles the height
of which varies by 3 mm either way.

SETTINGS

B - SETTING OF ROLLERS USING SETTING GAUGE

1) Take off the guide plate .

2) Unscrew and remove pressure block

3) Screw gauge and tighten it slightly without the shim

(setting gauge sleeve in not to be used)

4) Loosen roller bushing locking screws .

5) by turning roller bushings , set thread rollers so that

they are at same level as the upper groove.
Check by pushing roller arm in.

6) Set skirt rollers as the thread rollers, but by using the lower groove.

Would the rollers no longer be at a correct distance from sealing

head center line, proceed as follows :

1) Set the rollers as described above

2) Slide the sleeve on the gauge

3) Turn the lock nut till the rollers

are just touching the setting gauge

Once these settings have been made, remove the setting gauge
and fit the pressure block with its shim, guide plate and the arm
(removed to reach the pressure block).

SETTINGS

C - SETTING OF ROLLERS WITHOUT SETTING GAUGE

Place a cap without its pilferproof ring on a bottle.

If the cap is for carbonated drink, the top of which should be reformed, it must be threaded.
If the cap is pilferproof type, which does not require reforming on the top, it can be new, i.e. unthreaded.

Place the bottle under a sealing head and bring the head to its lowest point.
The rollers are then in closed position.

F Use a screwdriver, inserted between the thread roller arm

and the pressure block, to move the arm outwards till the
roller no longer touches the cap.

When you slowly release the arm, the roller must touch the cap
just under the knurl (beverage cap) or 3 mm below the bottom
of the groove (Pilferproof type cap with a wad).

Caution : The roller must not touch the pressure block.

For the skirt rollers :

F use the same procedure

$ When the arm is released, the roller must come just under the
bead and the roller compensating spring must be slightly
compressed.

In case of a STELCAP or SUPALUCAP, the spring should

not be compressed.

SEALING HEAD MANUAL ARC 1407742/CA 23416 (BACARDI Y COMPANIA S.A) Page 7/13
SETTINGS

D - SIDE PRESSURE

The side pressure depends on cap type.

This pressure is measured with a spring scale hooked onto the stem of one of the rollers.

F Keeping a finger on nut to detect any movment, pull the scale gradually
until the arm moves outwards.
$ Read the pressure from the scale.

The pressure exerced by the thread rollers should be : 12 kg

The skirt rollers should be set at a side pressure of : 9 kg

To change the setting, proceed as follows :

force

F Loosen lock nut .

F Turn the pressure screw :

- clockwise (right) to increase the pressure,
- anticlockwise (left) to reduce the pressure,
$ Check the pressure obtained, then lock the pressure
screw with lock nut .

Caution : It is recommended setting diametrically opposed the thread rollers to the same
value.

SETTING OF EJECTOR

Setting may vary according to the type of cap used.

Uncorrect setting may cause off square application.

F Unscrew ejector 50 (left hand thread) by means of an Allen key,

using a rod to hold the part 48.
F Take off the spring 51 and screw back part 50 on part 48.

The check is made by placing a new cap in contact with the piston, as illustrated below.
The setting is correct when the pressure block can turn freely but cannot move longitudinally.

F Add or take off spacer washers (53) until the cap sit on the ejector but without play..

Once the proper setting has been found, re-fit the spring and end piece in the head.

PRODUCTS DEFECTS

TROUBLE SHOOTING SUGGESTIONS

- Non standard adjustments to head pressure or pilferproof rolls to lower the removal torque may produce inadequate sealing
and leakers.
- To obtain effective and reliable closure applications during sustained production runs, it is obligatory to check the capping
from time to time to ensure that satisfactory application is actually being obtained.
- Particular attention should be directed to the top and side seal formation, threading depth, and the pilferproof ring lock.
We recommend a frequent quality check on closure application to verify that machine adjustments are correct.
Additional surveillance is strongly recommended when glassware and/or caps of different inventory or manufacture are to be
used.
- Failure to perform routine checking as described above can result in sustandard applications, leakers, and closure blow-offs.
