Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

The alarming number of infections is rapidly increasing day by day it is because

of the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 or covid-19. It was first seen in Wuhan,

Hubei Province of China last December 31, 2019 (Tuli and Gill 2020). Back in 2016

when the Dengvaxia was launched in the Philippines, Fear is the one of the reasons

why the participants are having a struggle towards vaccination as a lot of children have

died from the Dengvaxia vaccine. The participants hear news of how children suffer

from the media and their fear was get even worsened (Journal of Health Sciences,

2018). There’s a drop of vaccine confidence that vaccines are important from 93% of

strongly agreeing to 32%, drop in vaccine confidence that vaccines are safe from 82%

to 21% and a drop of vaccine confidence in effectiveness from 82% to 22%. These only

says that there are gaps or breakdown in public confidence in order to rebuild trust

(Larson et al 2018). And now with the increasing numbers of covid-19 vaccine, there are

some of the negative and reassuring attitude among individuals have already increase,

there is a Significant rate of distrust against the vaccines based on the surveys among

people. (Vergara et al 2021)

The influenza vaccine aims to targeted elderly to bring them direct protection but

as of now the vaccine focuses on its population. Influenza vaccine induce weaker this

means that it was short immune response in the elderly than young adults this could say

that indirect protection maybe more effective strategy as of now it is unknown if this was

the same to the other Covid – 19 vaccine (Lipsitch and dean 2020). The department of
health (DOH) temporary suspend for the use of AstraZeneca Vaccine for individual

below 60 years old, they say that they find out the report case of the rare blood cloth in

some of people used it. But in the other hand, after the DOH reviewing the information

about the rare blood cloth it say that the vaccine does mean that its suspend means that

tg vaccine is not effective they just say that they going to measure this case to ensure

the safety of all people. Based on what we know about vaccines for other diseases and

early data from clinical trials, experts believe that getting a COVID-19 vaccine also

helps keep you from getting seriously ill even if you do get COVID-19 (DOH 2021)

this study wants to know the insights of the senior high school students in taking

a covid vaccine .The objective of the researchers is to know why are the students is

undecided on taking the covid vaccine .this study also wants to know what will be their

ways to fight the virus .This studies information can give knowledge to students and can

help them improve their ways of thinking in this kind of situations

The importance of this research is to know why students are being undecided in

getting a vaccine for covid-19. This study may help contribute to school, knowing the

students insight may help the school to get an idea on what will be their ways to help

the students. This study can also contribute to parents, knowing their child's insight may

also help the parents to get an idea on what will be their ways to help their childrens.

What this study can do is that it will help the readers to learn and get an idea on what

will be the safe ways to avoid getting a virus.

Theoretical Framework

According to Wiley Online Library, Grounded Theory starts with concrete data

and ends in with rendering them in an explanatory theory this is become a routine

practice in qualitative research, it has a step by step process which at the start of the

research process the researcher must gathered a data from the interview the

researcher codes the data compares data and codes, and identifies analytic leads and

tentative categories to develop through further data collection .

The researcher will use a grounded theory to know about the insights of

undecided students in getting a covid-19 vaccine. The researcher follows the step by

step process which coding the data is the first, next is categorize the codes and lastly is

to build a new idea.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the decision of senior high students who are undecided in

vaccination for Covid-19.

1. How do we describe our respondents in term of:

1.1 age

1.2 sex

1.3 economic status

2. Why senior high students are undecided in getting a vaccine for Covid-19

3. What are Their ways to keep themselves a Covid-19 free?

Scope and Delimination

This study aims to know the decision of undecided students in getting a vaccine

for covid-19 both grade 11 and grade 12 in one private school in Pasig City of year

2021-2022 2nd semester.

Significant of the Study

This study entitled " The Insight of Senior High Students on being undecided in

getting a vaccine for covid-19" is being created to benefit the following:

Senior High School Students. The study will benefit the senior high school students

that they can gained a knowledge about covid19 because most of the students are not

knowledgeable in covid 19.

Parents. This research will benefit parents to keep their children safe Since certain

parents work outdoors and may be affected by covid, they may no longer be afraid to

inject their children with covid now that there is a vaccine.

Teachers. This research will be benefits to the teacher That every senior high school

student will take the vaccine of the covid19 everyone will be safe even the teachers

during the face to face classes.

School Admin. This research will benefits the school admin that every students should

wear a face mask and face shield and should also be that you have been vaccinated

with covid19 before going to school and if you do not have a face mask and face shield

and you are also not vaccinated in covid 19 you will not be admitted to school.
Future Researchers. This research will benefit the future researchers because they will

use it to conduct research on students' reliance on the covid 19 vaccine, as well as to

assess students' understanding of covid 19 and the methods for preventing its

dissemination.

Definition of Terms

For better understanding of this study, here are the definitions of terms used in the

research.

Insight - Refers to the perspective of senior high students on being undecided in

vaccination for COVID-19.

Senior High Students - Refers to the informants of the research, specifically Grade 11

and Grade 12 students.

Undecided - Refers to students that are haven't decided on getting vaccination for

COVID-19

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Profile of the Informants

According to Bubar et al. (2021) There is an effective vaccine who prioritized to

adults ages 20 to 49 years to lessen the cases of covid-19 but it can be useful if the

vaccine prioritized to adults aged greater than 60 it is because to minimized the years of

life lost scenarios. They examined first the impact of five vaccine prioritization strategies

for a hypothetical infection and transmission-blocking vaccine of varying efficacy. These

strategies prioritized first to children and teenagers, second to adults between ages 20 –

49 years, third to adults 20 years or older, fourth is adults 60 years or older and last is to

all individuals. In these strategies, the time that the prioritized population was been

vaccinated that was the time that they allow the vaccine to any age group. It must take

70% of any other age group to eligible to be vaccinated

According to Scully et al. (2020) There are evidences of sex differences in Covid-

19 severity found in China, were males are higher in terms of hospital admission and

morality than females. In South Korea, widespread of community testing occur, 60% of

those testing are females represented positive for SARS-CoV-2, they suggest that

females may receive infection, regardless of they have a lower-case fatality rate (CFR).

In the United States, people with symptomatic disease was prioritized for testing, male

and females are both similar in the diagnosis rate but mortality in males had 1.5 higher

than females.
According to Largent and Miller (2021) Covid-19 vaccination offers payment as

an incentive may look like badly and taking advantages to those residents of US who

lost jobs, experience food and housing insecurities, or residents belongs in poverty. In

these times of Covid-19 shown attention to the huge lack of social safety net in the US.

While some individuals and some families struggle, some of them they might notice that

they must accept the vaccination in order for them to buy food or pay their rent, they

may feel that they been vaccinated for cash that they might have no choice but to

accepted. This should be a problem in the government that offer cash incentives to

encourage vaccination when it becomes failed.

Decision and Ways

According to Akarsu 2020, they conducted a survey about public’s thoughts and

attitudes to the future COVID‐19 vaccine. Most of the participants stated that they will

be vaccinated and some of them stated to vaccinated their children against Covid-19 if

the vaccine is already developed. But some of them rejected the vaccine on both

themselves and for their children because of “Afraid of the side effects of vaccine”,

“don’t think it can be reliable as it will be a new vaccine” and “Covid-19 infection is a

biological weapon and the vaccine will serve those who produce this virus”
According to Lau 2020, they surveyed respondents for their study about

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of COVID-19 among income-poor households in the

Philippines, from communities in rural urban and coastal settings. They found out that

television and radio is the most used media sources for information about Covid-19.

Most of the respondents already know that coughing and sneezing is the transmission

of the virus but some of them included hand contact, in the other hand, handwashing

was the most common preventive measure against the virus because it was identified

by most of the respondents and some of them added social distancing.

According to Tan et al 2021. During Covid-19 pandemic 99% of people wore a

mask as a protection. 73% using a face mask with a good compliance on it, on the other

hand 41.8% of the participants cleaned their hand before putting a face mask. More

than half of the participants 62.1% touched their face mask while using it. About putting

a used face mask on the garbage bin 7.6% of the participants discarded it into a

garbage bin without a lid and 22.5% discarded it into a garbage bin in their reach

regardless of presence of a lid. And lastly a lot of participant wearing a disposable

medical mask 94.8% than 26.2% who used a N95 respirators.

According to Med 2020. The Saudi Ministry of Health (MOH) surveyed 5105

participants including 58.4% are females, 66.3% are young individuals aged 18 – 37

years, 55.8% have a degree holder and 51% are from west region. Most of them 78.2%

are high awareness 81.3% is staying at home most of them are females, middle region

and had a high education. On the other hand having a social distancing found in 37.8%

most of them never leaving home during the stay at home period.
Chapter 3

Research Design and Methodology

Method and Technique

This study will require the use of the observational style of research to determine

the insight of senior high students on being undecided in getting a vaccine for covid-19.

Observational research is a qualitative research method where the target

respondent/subject is observed and analyzed in their natural/real-world setting Bakshi

(2017). This research will also use a qualitative method and the researchers will

conduct an interview to perceive the insight of senior high students on indecisiveness in

getting vaccinated for covid-19.

Informant and Sampling of the Study

The target informants will be the senior high school students, from a private

school in Pasig City. The researchers choose this informants because they have a

refined way of thinking because of the education statues they have and what they have

finished. the researcher uses a purposive sampling technique a non-random to

determine the senior high school students

Instrument of the Study

According to Young et al. (2018) Interview is mostly or commonly used as

methodology in conservation research, because it is flexible, allowing insights from the

informants or participants in a small sample sized that focus on their views.

The researcher use interview to know the decisions of undecided students in

both grade 11 and 12 regarding in getting a vaccine for covid-19

The interview guide question is divided into two parts the first part is all about the

respondent’s information where we can analyze the respondent’s identity and the last

part is all about decision making in this part the respondents must have to decide if

he/she wants to be vaccinated or not and answer the follow up question.

Research Instrument (Research Guide Question)

Tittle: The Insight of Senior High Students on being undecided in getting a vaccine for

covid-19

PART 1 Respondents Information

*Age:

*Sex

*Economic status
PART 2 Decision making

1. Are you undecided in getting a vaccine for Covid-19?

2. What are your ways to keep yourself a Covid-19 free?

Data Gathering Procedure

This section will state the sequence of steps taken by the researchers in

gathering data. First, the researchers will create a title validated by the professor that

also includes the problem to be answered by the result of the study. An observational

style of research is used. The researchers then formulate interview guide questions to

know the insight of senior high students on being undecided in getting a vaccine for

COVID-19.

After getting the research instrument validated, the researchers will now start

finding a maximum of 5 students, taking into consideration the fact that they are

undecided in terms of getting vaccinated for COVID-19.

Once the respondents have been gathered, the researchers will conduct an

online interview on each student using the interview guide questions created

beforehand. The senior high students will provide their own insight on being undecided

in getting a COVID-19 vaccine for themselves.

After conducting the interview, the researchers will organize and analyze the

gathered data in order to answer the problem of the research.

CHAPTER 4

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data

This chapter present the analysis and interprets the data gathered in draw out

important information and significant result about undecided students in getting a

vaccine for Covid-19. For clarity and consistency in the discussion, the data are tabular

form

The data below present distribution of storytelling in terms of content.

desisyon o pasya sa pagkuha ng COVID-19 vaccine?

Informant No. 1: Wala-- undecided po.

KC: Bakit?

KC: Ok so, pangalawa.

decision or conclusion in getting a COVID-19 vaccine?

Informant No. 1: None-- I'm undecided.

KC: Why?

Informant No. 1: Because, the vaccine, it's not that I disregard it. I'm in doubt because

the other vaccines; it's like the price is not worth for its efficacy rate. For example, the

Sinovac, for example its efficacy rate is 50% and I have to pay 2k, 3k-- it's like the 50/50

chance is not worth it-- if you'll be cured, if you'll be immune or not.

KC: OK so, second. What are the ways you take yourself to avoid being contracting

COVID?

Informant No. 1: I stay at home, I just stay at home. When I want to go out-- when I

need something from outside, I use masks, I wear, so I don't get infected with COVID,

and as much as possible, I avoid going out when I don't need to.

KC: Alright. That's it. Thank you so much. Your response will help with our research.

Informant No. 1: Alright.

Covid-19?
Informant no. 2: hindi paglabas, patuloy na pagsunod sa protocol since hindi naman

is 50% and I have to pay 2k, 3k-- it's like

the 50/50 chance is not worth it-- if you'll

be cured, if you'll be immune or not.”

Informant No. 4 “Because I hear a lot of hearsay or news

(Undecided) that there are negative side-effects of

vaccines, and there are other vaccines

that aren't approved by the WHO.”

Based on the matrix#4 show most of the informants are having a doubt in the

efficacy rate of the vaccines to its prize, they hear a lot of negative side-effects of

vaccines and other vaccine that are not approve by the health department.

Based on a study conducted by IJCP results shown that most of the reason of

rejection about Covid-19 vaccine are; they don’t think it can be reliable as it will be a

new vaccine, they don’t think that it can be effective, having doubts about vaccination

and afraid from the side effects of vaccine. (Akarsu et al 2020)

Covid-19, it has also provided recommendation that can be perused by the researchers

The study was conducted in one private school in Pasig City the informants were

the senior high students which is grade 11 and 12 they were selected using purposive

sampling. It employed qualitative research method. Pertain data obtain thru interview.

Summary of Findings

-Profile of the informants 2 from 18 years old and then 3 from 17 years old then 2 male

and 3 females as part of the participant of the study. 3 of the informants have a high

economic income then 2 of the informants have a low economic income.

-Informants difficulties are having lack of trust about the covid-19 vaccine’s

effectiveness and the least are they hear a lot of hearsay or news that there are

negative side-effects of vaccines

-The ways of the informants to be a covid-19 free is to staying at home and the least is

to follow health protocols
