Motion is the action of changing
location, position or orientation of a
body over time.
It was developed about 300 years ago
by Isaac Newton.

EXAMPLES OF MOTION:
Motion that changes the orientation
of a body is called rotation.
Motion along a line or a curve
is called translation.
Linear motion is the motion of an
object along a straight line.

Distance and displacement are two quantities that may seem to mean the
same thing, yet have distinctly different definitions and meanings.

Distance is a scalar quantity that

refers to "how much ground an
object has covered" during its
motion.
Displacement is a vector quantity
that refers to "how far out of place
an object is"; it is the object's
overall change in position.
Speed is defined as the rate at
which an object moves. Speed
depends on the distance an
object travels and the time it
takes to travel that distance.
Velocity is defined as a vector
measurement of the rate and
A change in velocity: direction of motion.
- Change of direction Velocity is the speed at which
- Change of speed
(or can be a change in both)
something moves in one direction.

Acceleration is the rate in
which an object increasing
its velocity.
Acceleration is also seen
as the act of speeding up
over time.
Acceleration can be experienced every
day in a vehicle.
Acceleration is also a vector quantity, so
it includes both magnitude and direction.
