PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2
Quarter 1 - Lesson 4
Research in Daily Life
RESEARCH USED IN DAILY LIFE

K-12 Senior High School curriculum offers distinct tracks and strands to the
learners that surely would develop their promptness in mind, acquisition of suitable 21st
century competencies in the level of knowledge and skills to pursue better lives for
themselves, their families, and their community. Thus, one of its learning areas is the
Practical Research II.

So not only is research an invaluable tool for building on crucial knowledge, it’s
also the most reliable way we can begin to understand the complexities of various issues;
to maintain our integrity as we disprove lies and uphold important truths; to serve as the
seed for analysing convoluted sets of data; as well as to serve as ‘nourishment’, or
exercise for the mind.

The research is important for the students because it helps them to have a
detailed analysis of everything. When you have a proper in-depth analysis of any topic,
the result comes out to be fruitful and also the knowledge is enhanced.

Research is important in our everyday life because it: Gives us a light to inquire
about the right information. Develops and attitude to not believe everything easily
available and go on one track. Sharpens the brain and gives it a judicious vision to look.

In this learning resource, you will be encountering how to design a research in

daily life.

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

• Design a research used in daily life;

Direction: Read each item carefully and use your notebook to write your answers.

True or False. Write AGREE before the item if the statement is true and DISAGREE if
the statement is false.

_______1. In designing your research study you must include the goals of your study.

_______2. Quantitative research do not use hypotheses.

_______3. Sources of research topics are tied to real life experiences and research.

_______4. In designing your research project you will consider the ethics and the

method to analyse your data.

_______5. Designing a research in daily life is very useful in education.

Observe your surroundings carefully. Cite some observations of the problems that you
have discovered which is concerned in our daily life.

What is research design?

The design of a piece of research refers to the practical way in which the research
was conducted according to a systematic attempt to generate evidence to answer the
research question. The term "research methodology" is often used to mean something
similar, however different writers use both terms in slightly different ways: some writers,
for example, use the term "methodology" to describe the tools used for data collection,
which others (more properly) refer to as methods.

The idea behind a design is that different kinds of issues logically demand
different kinds of data-gathering arrangement so that the data will be:

• relevant to your thesis or the argument you wish to present;

• an adequate test of your thesis (i.e. unbiased and reliable);
• accurate in establishing causality, in situations where you wish to go beyond
description to provide explanations for whatever is happening around you;
• capable of providing findings that can be generalized to situations other than
those of your immediate organization.

The most important issue here is that the design you use should be appropriate to
your initial question. Implicit within your question will be issues of size, breadth,
relationship between variables, how easy is it to measure variables etc.

How do we design a research used in daily life?

The two main approaches to methodology

Quantitative methods: Qualitative methods:
• typically use numbers • typically use words
• are deductive • are inductive
• involve the researcher as ideally • require
an objective, impartial observer more participation and involvement on
the part of the researcher.
• may focus on cause and effect • focuses on understanding of
phenomena in their social,
institutional, political and economic
context
• require a hypothesis • do not require a hypothesis
• have the drawback that they • have the drawback that they focus on

A. Discuss the following:

1. How do we design a research used in daily lives?

2. What factors should you consider in choosing a topic for research study?

3. What are the different factors to consider in designing a research?

4. What is the importance of designing a research used in daily lives?

B. Design a research used in daily life with your chosen research problem or topic.

(Post Test)

1. Research title is synonymous to research project.

2. Designing a research in daily life do not need to have a hypothesis.
3. Research title must clearly reflect the topic of investigation.
4. The title of the research must be original and clear only.
5. Your research teacher is the only one who can choose the design of the
research.
6. Research design must follow certain factors and considerations.
7. You can include your personal views, ideas, opinions and prejudices on your
study.
8. You can ask other people who are knowledgeable about the topic about
questions that they have thought of.
9. You do not consider in designing a research your focuses on understanding of
phenomena in their social, institutional, political and economic context.
10. You need to consider the factors in designing your research.
