Lesson Title A Review of Transformations

Content Area 7th Grade Advanced Algebra

Content Standards MGSE8.G.1: Verify experimentally the congruence properties of rotations,

reflections, and translations: lines are taken to lines and line segments to line
segments of the same length; angles are taken to angles of the same
measure; parallel lines are taken to parallel lines.

MGSE8.G.3:  Describe the effect of dilations, translations, rotations and

reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates.
Technology Standards 1.1.c. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves
their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways

Universal Design Kahoot! is accessible to students in a variety of different ways. This tool can
Rationale be used in and out of the classroom, as students can log into the website
from any device that has internet access, or the app downloaded. When the
tool is used, students are given an (adjustable) amount of time for each
question and immediate feedback. Users can also be anonymous or in
groups to enhance the learning experience and usability of the tool. Through
the use of Kahoot!, many representations through visual, audible, and other
means are accessible and easily added into the assessment. Additionally,
teachers can add or remove any questions from accessible Kahoots, or they
can create their own. All of these can allow for scaffolding and questions that
increase the students’ learning experiences.
Lesson Idea - Prior The goal of the lesson is for students to be able to review the topics covered
over the last few classes: Translations, Rotations, and Reflections. At the
beginning of class, the teacher will allow students to go over their notes and
ask any questions that they have about the topics or any previous work. After
some time, the teacher will work through examples of each transformation on
the board and give students time to work them out on their own and discuss
in groups before working the problem out for the entire class. Once these
examples have been completed, the teacher will again give students time to
adjust their notes and ask any questions that they have remaining. At this
point, students will be asked to clear their desks except for scratch paper, a
pencil, and their notes.
SRAT Purpose To illuminate common misconceptions, Formative assessment of content,
Summative assessment of content knowledge, Test preparation.
Question Types Multiple Choice, True/False

Lesson Idea - During During the activity, students will access their preferred device to access the
Kahoot!. The teacher will display the instructions on the Smart Board for all
students to follow and join the game. Students will join the game and get
ready to answer the given questions. Once the game has begun, the students
will have a limited amount of time for each question (which will be shown on
the Smart Board). After each question, as students receive immediate
feedback, the teacher will work out the problem and explain the steps taken.
This is repeated for all questions of the game so that students can have
practice solving these types of problems and following/creating mathematical
instincts.
Lesson Idea - After After the lesson, the teacher will summarize what has been covered as well
as common mistakes that students have been making. These errors will be
addressed again with the correct steps shown while explaining why the error
occurred. For the remainder of the class period, students will be able to ask
any follow-up questions and prepare for the upcoming Unit Test.
Data Plan Students will receive a daily grade of their final score. As Kahoot! has a
competitive feature, the top 5 students will all receive bonus points on the
next test. Students who did not place in the top 5 but got all questions right
will also receive bonus points on the test. The data collected from this lesson
will let the teacher know if any topics need to be addressed again or in more
detail before giving a Unit Test, as well as let the teacher know which
students are struggling with the topics and which are understanding very well.
Personal Learning I am creating problems to analyze student understanding. I hope that I learn
Goals how to create problems and assessments that analyze how students are
grasping concepts in my classroom. I also hope that I learn how I can better
individualize instruction for my students. I hope that students will be able to
sue the feedback to see how well they understand the material as well as
highlight the areas that they need to work more on.
Design Reflection I feel like the activity will encourage students to study the concepts that they
do not understand well and give them confidence in their ability with the
questions they understood. I could have students create their own Kahoot! or
presentation that shows what they understood before the activity and what
they now/better understand after doing the activity.
