Dear Stephen,
I’m very delighted to hear that my family will be a host for your 2-month cultural homestay
programme. I’ll introduce a little about your future homestay, we live in a classic house with
3 bedrooms (of course you will have your own room). Despite the awkwardness of a small
house, the infrastructures around here are very convenient for your visit.
Okay, avoiding (to avoid) culture shock for the first time, I will tell you 3 rules in my family
that all members have to abide by. Firstly, attitude is everything. You have to respect the
elders, for instance: greeting with honorifics, not swearing in front of them,...etc. Another
important rule in my family is that (we should have) having good table manners, in Viet
Nam, all members will gather and have meals together so table manners are especially vital in
our culture. I will give you some examples: do not dip your chopsticks into the shared bowl
or dish, use a ladle or an unused pair of chopsticks to pick up food; do not make noises while
eating, it’s fine to share small conversation (conversations) while eating but making too much
sound at the table is considered impolite. The third important rule is helping around with the
housework and other home duties. In my house, we share chores equally and so you are. (so
do you)
Hope you feel comfortable with our rules, if you have any questions, please let me know (you
can directly call me via phone number: XXX). We will try our best to build a wonderful
experience towards Viet Nam for you during your time here.
Looking forward to meeting you.
All best wishes to you,
Hao Nguyen
