Graph of the Function – f: x anx

The graph of the function f: x anx is a smooth curve in the positive region of the rectangular Cartesian
plane. This smooth curve is called a growth curve (or exponential curve).

1. Draw the graph of the exponential function f: x 2x for the domain 0 ≤ x ≤ 6.

The table above was obtained in an experiment.

(a) Plot a graph to represent the data obtained.
(b) Determine the particular formula connecting the time and the number of
bacteria.
(c) Determine: (i) the number of bacteria after 4.5 h
(ii) the time when the number of bacteria is expected to reach
512 000.

(b) (i) N = 23 000
(ii) t = 9 h
4. A flu virus multiplies according to the formula N = a . 2t, where N = the number of flu virus a time t.
(a) Plot a graph of N against t, when a = 1000 for the times t = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 h.
(b) From your graph estimate: (i) the number of flu virus present initially.
(ii) the number of flu virus after 2.5 hours.
(iii) the time when the number of flu virus should reach 64 000.
