Surgeons International Volunteerism Award and was selected to give the 2016 ACS Scudder Oration on Trauma,
“Responding to Crisis: Surgeons as Leaders in Disaster Response.”
During the COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Briggs led the U.S. governmental Trauma and Critical Care Team (TCCT) to Tuba
City, AZ. It is one of the few hospitals that serves a very remote and poverty stricken Native American reservation.
She and 14 other clinicians spent 10 days working in their ICUs and emergency department to help them better
utilize their personnel and resources to meet the increasing number of patients.
From her letter of nomination: Dr. Briggs “has supported women in surgery since the beginning. She has received
numerous teaching awards from the residents and has been instrumental in the careers of at least 100 female
surgical residents and medical students over the last 35 years. As a professor of surgery, she has contributed
significantly to the recruitment of female residents, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and faculty. During
her tenure many of these same residents have gone on to set up their own research laboratories and start their
own prestigious careers in general surgery, trauma, critical care, surgical oncology, global surgery, and many
other surgical disciplines directly as a result of her mentorship.”
Janey S. A. Pratt, MD, FACS, clinical associate professor of surgery, Stanford, said, “I cannot think of a better, more
deserving person for this prestigious award. Dr. Briggs is not only an accomplished trauma surgeon, but one whom
I believe exemplifies the spirit of Mary Edwards Walker in her perseverance, excellence, and pioneering behavior.
She has paved the way for numerous younger women at Harvard Medical School, MGH, and globally.”

FELLOWSHIP PLEDGE
Recognizing that the American College of Surgeons seeks to exemplify and develop the highest
traditions of our ancient profession, I hereby pledge myself, as a condition of Fellowship in the
College, to live in strict accordance with the College’s principles and regulations.
I PLEDGE TO PURSUE the practice of surgery with honesty and to place the welfare and the rights
of my patient above all else. I promise to deal with each patient as I would wish to be dealt with if I
were in the patient’s position, and I will respect the patient’s autonomy and individuality.
I FURTHER PLEDGE TO AFFIRM and support the social contract of the surgical profession with
my community and society.
I WILL TAKE NO PART in any arrangement or improper financial dealings that induce referral,
treatment, or withholding of treatment for reasons other than the patient’s welfare.
UPON MY HONOR, I declare that I will advance my knowledge and skills, will respect my
colleagues, and will seek their counsel when in doubt about my own abilities. In turn, I will willingly
help my colleagues when requested.
I RECOGNIZE THE INTERDEPENDENCY of all health care professionals and will treat each with
respect and consideration.
