SECTOR-3, DWARKA, NEW DELHI

Subject: Upgradation of NSITinto a State University

Dear Students,

This is to apprise you that upgradation of NSIT into a State university of Engineering and
Technology is on the cards. The brand NSIT, which is already recognized nationally and
internationally, is going to get a boost and stand on its own.

In this context, this is to let you know that this move is not entirely new as will be evident
from the following:-

Back Ground and earlier efforts:

• At the very inception of the erstwhile Delhi Institute of Technology (DIT) in 1983, it
was envisaged that the institute would eventually aim for becoming a university.
• In 1986-1987, when the institute was granted administrative autonomy, it was
directed to keep in mind the long term goal of acquiring Deemed-to-be-University
status in future.
• A proposal for granting Deemed-University status was approved by the Govt. of
Delhi and the Council of Ministers in 1995 with the direction to the institute to take
up the matter with the appropriate authorities.
• Accordingly, the institute applied for the grant of Deemed-University status, as DIT in
1995 and as NSIT in'2001-02.
• The joint AICTE and UGC committee which visited the institute in 2001-02 gave a
very strong recommendation for the grant of the status of Deemed-to-be-University
to NSIT. However, Delhi Government was not willing to sacrifice 85% reservation of
seats for Delhi students and consequently, the idea was deferred.

Recent Developments

• Now that the Delhi Government has already created a number of State Universities
like DTU, lilT Delhi, Ambedkar University, G.G.5. Indraprastha University and more
recently, Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), the time is now ripe for
upgradation of NSITalso into a State University.
• We believe that NSIT certainly deserves to be upgraded into a state University!
• The Board of Governors of NSIT in its 36th Meeting held on February 10, 2011 has
already given its concurrence to the move of the Delhi Government to upgrade NSIT
into a State University.
What shall not be affected by this upgradation: Status of Current Students?

It has been agreed by the Delhi Government as well as the Board of Governors of NSIT that
in the process of transformation of NSIT into a State university

i. Even after upgradation, the name 'NSIT' would remain intact [A possible name of
the University could be 'NSIT (University of Engineering and Technology')]; thereby
maintaining a brand linkage with the past).

ii. The present students, as well as those admitted before the upgradation, will
continue to be governed by the Faculty of Technology, Delhi University.

Opinion/suggestions of the present (as well as the past) students and all concerned, on
any of the relevant issues, are invited on the following so that we can be benefited by the
wise counsel of all concerned:

• What kind of courses (UG/PG/Research) should NSIT run after acquiring the status of
State University of Engineering and Technology
