A HOLY HOUR FOR THE INCREASE OF

VOCATIONS

Diocese of San Pablo

Opening Hymn

O salutaris Hostia Uni trinoque Domino

Que caeli pandis ostium Sit sempiterna gloria
Bella premunt hostilia Qui vitam sine termino
Da robur fer auxilium Nobis donet in patria

The presider exposes the host in the mostrance on the altar.

Incensation

After placing the incense in the censer, the presider kneels and invences the
blessed sacrament.

Presider:

Let us bless our heavenly Father source of every perfect gift.

R. Glory to you forever.

Let us bless Christ, wellspring of every blessing.

R. Glory to you forever.

Let us bless the Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life.

R. Glory to you forever.

Presider:

Lord we ask you to open our minds and hearts to your Spirit.
Help all of us to be open and ever discerning of Your will for

2
our lives. We pray that all of us may respond generously and
lovingly to unique calling to a state of life that you have
designed us to live and have planned for us. We pray to have
hearts as Mary, always freely and joyfully saying “yes” to you
in all your plans; that we may say with Mary “Be it done unto
me according to your will, Lord!”

After a brief moment of silent adoration, all recite the following prayer.

OPENING PRAYER

All loving Father,

you promised always to give your Church shepherds.
In faith, we know your promise cannot fail.
Trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit at work in the
Church,
we pray you raise up sacred ministers from your holy people,
that the sacrifice in which you give your body and blood
may be daily renewed in the world until we come to that
kingdom
where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

R. Amen.

All sit for some moments of reflection.

READINGS

Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians

I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of

the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness and

3
patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to
preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bind of peace: one Body
and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is
over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of
us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. And he gave some as
Apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors
and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for
building up the Body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of
faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the
extent of the full stature of Christ.

The Word of the Lord

Some moments of reflection.

On Eagles Wings

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord who abides in his shadow
for life. Say to the Lord my refuge my God in whom I trust.

And he will raise you up on eagles wings, bear you on the breath of
dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of
his hand.

The snare of the fowler will never capture you and famine will bring
you no fear under his wings your refuge, his faithfulness your
shield.

You need not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by
day; though thousands fall about you near you it shall not come.

For to his angels he’s given a command, to guide you in all of your
ways, upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your
foot upon a stone.

1 Corinthians 9:16 -19, 22-23
A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians
Brothers and sisters: If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me
to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me
if I do not preach it! If I do so willingly, I have a recompense, but
if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship. What
then is my recompense? That, when I preach, I offer the gospel free
of charge so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.
Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to
all so as to win over as many as possible. To the weak I became a
weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save
at least some. All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too
may have a share in it.

1 Samuel 3:3b-10, 19
A reading from the First Book of Samuel
Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God
was. The Lord called Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.” Samuel
ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called me.” “I did not call you,”
Eli said. “Go back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep. Again the
Lord called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am,” he said.
“You called me.” But Eli answered, “I did not call you, my son. Go
back to sleep.”

At that time Samuel was not familiar with the Lord, because the
Lord had nor revealed anything to him as yet. The Lord called
Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he
said, “Here I am. You called me.”

Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the youth. So he said
to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, Speak, Lord,
for your servant is listening.” When Samuel went to sleep in his
place, the Lord came and revealed his presence, calling out as
before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak, for your
servant is listening.”

Samuel grew up, and the Lord was with him, not permitting any
word of his to be without effect.

Sirach 3:2-7, 12-14

A reading from the Book of Sirach
God sets a father in honor over his children; a mother’s authority
he confirms over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for
sins, and preserves himself for them. When he prays, he is heard;
he stores up riches who reveres his mother. Whoever honors his
father is gladdened by children, and, when he prays, is heard.
Whoever reveres his father will live a long life; he who obeys his
father brings comfort to his mother.

My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as
long as he lives. Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him; revile
him not all the days of his life; kindness to a father will not be
forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your sins- a house
raised in justice to you.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS BY ST. JOHN PAUL II

Jesus, Son of God,

in whom the fullness of the Divinity dwells,
You call all the baptized to " put out into the deep",
taking the path that leads to holiness.
Waken in the hearts of young people the desire
to be witnesses in the world of today
to the power of your love.
Fill them with your Spirit of fortitude and prudence,
so that they may be able to discover the full truth
about themselves and their own vocation.

11
Our Saviour,
sent by the Father to reveal His merciful love,
give to your Church the gift
of young people who are ready to put out into the deep,
to be the sign among their brothers
of Your presence which renews and saves.

Holy Virgin, Mother of the Redeemer,

sure guide on the way towards God and towards neighbour,
You who pondered his word in the depth of your heart,
sustain with your motherly intercession
our families and our ecclesial communities,
so that they may help adolescents and young people
to answer generously the call of the Lord.
Amen.

All will stand to give reverence to the Gospel

Alleluia! Alleluia

GOSPEL
Matthew 9:35-38
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Jesus went around all the towns and villages, teaching in their
synagogues, proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom, and curing
every disease and illness. At the sight of the crowds, his heart was
moved with pity for them because they were troubled and
abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his
disciples, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask
the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”
