HANDLE: to carry the handle physically, It is for easy and save movement of the instrument from one
position to another.
HANDLE SCREW - to hold objects together — the handle and main body — and positioning the handle
OPTICAL PLUMMET - is used for accurate centering over a station. It has either a bullseye or cross hair
sight for positioning the instrument over a survey marker or ground control point.
PLATE LEVEL - located between the two standards, is used for leveling the instrument in the
horizontal plane.
OPERATION PANEL - You can use the display and keys of the operation panel to configure machine
settings or operate functions.
BATTERY COVER: They shield against electromagnetic radiation and protect against the penetration of
liquids and foreign objects as well as the battery in the event of an external fire.
VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL TANGENT SCREWS: They are used to move the crosshairs on their
respective axis when seen through they eyepiece.
FOCUSING KNOB: It is to focus the target when seeing it from the eyepiece.
BASE PLATE: It is the area to which the instrument level attaches on the tripod.
POWER SUPPLY CONNECTOR - allows an electrical current to pass through it for the exclusive
purpose of providing power to a device
TRIPOD: A tripod is a three-legged stand, important in providing the foundation for auto levels and other
leveling instruments. It is usually made up of Aluminum for the sake of lightness.
SERIAL SIGNAL CONNECTOR - for the Data Collector to communicate with the Total Station, you will
need either Bluetooth connectivity or a hard wired serial cable connection.
REFLECTOR: It is used to reflect the signals sent by the EDM it is usually a glass prism fitted on a tripod.
CIRCULAR LEVEL - located on the tribrach of the instrument and is used to roughly level the instrument.

FOCUSING KNOB - Can be turned to make objects appear crisp and clear
VERTICAL CIRCLE - Marked by degrees, used for setting and reading vertical angles
HORIZONTAL VERNIER SCALE - Moves around main scale determining horizontal angular readings too
small to read on main scale
HORIZONTAL TANGENT KNOB - Can be adjusted to make the instrument move left or right
VERTICAL TANGENT KNOB - Can be adjusted to make the instrument move up or down
VERTICAL VERNIER SCALE - a scale that moves around the main scale and is used to determine angular
measurements that the original scale cannot read.
EYEPIECE - Located at the viewing end of the telescope, it can be turned to bring the crosshairs into
focus
BASE PLATE - The base plate of a transit level is the area in which the level is attached to the tripod.
LEVELING SCREW - Allows adjustments to be made to ensure the instrument is level in all positions
COMPASS – Compass is used to measure the angle between the normal line and line of sight.
Standard/A-frame – Standards look like 'A' shaped and for that, it is known as A-frame. The
standards’ frames support the telescope and allow it to spin about the vertical axis.
THEODOLITE
TELESCOPE – It is used to see the object. It rotates about a horizontal axis in the vertical
plane. It can be up to an accuracy of 20 degrees.
LEVELING SCREW – These are present in the leveling head of a theodolite in between trivet and
tribrach. These screws are used for leveling the instrument i.e., to make plate level axis truly
horizontal.
TRIBRACH – clamp the upper part of the instrument with the lower part
DISPLAY- a LCD screen which shows outputs to the user.
OPERATION PANEL - You can use the display and keys of the operation panel to configure machine
settings or operate functions.
PLATE VIAL - VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL TANGENT SCREWS: They are used to move the crosshairs on
their respective axis when seen through they eyepiece.
OBJECTIVE LENS - focus on the object to form image at the plane of reticle, It catches the object being
sighted and magnifies the object.
HANDLE - to carry the handle physically, It is for easy and save movement of the instrument from one
position to another.
HANDLE SCREW - to hold objects together — the handle and main body — and positioning the handle
BATTERY
VERTICAL/HORIZONTAL CLAMP: They are to lock the instrument towards a certain point. When engaged
they restrict the movement of Telescope on their respective axis.
VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL TANGENT SCREWS: They are used to move the crosshairs on their
respective axis when seen through they eyepiece.
