3. HOW RISK FACTORS CHANGED?

i. Increases in death rates from chronic non-communicable diseases.


ii. The traditional Arab diet has changed from high-fibre and low-fat food
with increased integration .
iii. Unhealthy dietary habits are prevalent in children, adolescents, and
adults of global fast-food .
iv. High intake of fast food and carbonated beverages and a low intake of
milk, fruits, and vegetables, and frequently consume snacks rich in calories,
salt, and fat between meals, skip breakfast, consume foods outside the
home, and eat while watching television.
v. Political and economic problems in the Arab world have affected the
availability of food, Palestinian, Iraq, Syria, and the recurring famine in
Somalia.
vi. These factors have affected the availability of and access to foods of
sufficient calorific value or nutritious variety.

4. WHAT DOES IT MEAN (REORIENTATION AND STRENGTHENING


OF HEALTH SYSTEM?

i. Reorientation of the health system is


needed towards outreach, prevention and
management of several risk factors,
management of comorbidities, counseling,
and patient self-management.

5. WHAT ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN TO ADDRESS TOBACCO


CONSUMPTION?

i. First:
effective tobacco control mechanisms fall largely outside the
health sector. The
implementation of smoke-free environment legislation, for
example, might be under
the authority of the Ministry of Interior, and taxation of cigarettes
might be the
remit of trade rather than health authorities.
ii. Second:
control measures are subject to complex interactions between
political and
economic forces and to the strategies used by trans- national
tobacco companies.

6. WHAT ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN TO ADDRESS UNHEALTHY


DIETS?

Jordan addressed the four risk factors: salt,


fats, fruits and vegetables, physical activity,
reformulating food products, reducing
hydrogenated fats, reducing salt intake, and
reducing the prices of fruits and vegetables.
