Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Learning is a process of achieving knowledge, skill, and performance.

Thus, learning is ultimately considered one of the fundamental pillars of

society changes. Nowadays, technology has obviously made our lives easier.

That means internet technology has been considered as an important medium

for many aspects of our lives including academic learning. E-learning or

online learning has received much attention in recent years globally

E-learning is mainly a kind of learning and teaching activities through

the internet. It has been applied in basic education in higher education,

vocational, and so on, and it shows good aspects. Maritime education and

training has the characteristics of internationalization, specialization,

standardization and sustainability.

E-learning has many advantages but it is not perfect because it has

excessive dependence on network. E-learning goes against face to face

communication between teachers and students or students with each other,

from the technology development and application has been realized the

technical interaction such as telephone conference, network video and so on.

COLLEGE OF MARITIME EDUCATION

-2-

However, compared to traditional face to face interaction. E-learning is still

lack of direct emotional communication, and it reflects more on the “human-

computer interaction”. Without the face to face communication between

teachers and students or students with each other (classmates), the effect of

study will be influenced.

Network information equipment is the supporter of E-learning. The

existence development and using of E-learning relies heavily on the

construction of information infrastructure is complete or not directly

determines the development level of E-learning

In traditional classrooms, teachers can give students immediate face-

to-face feedback. Students who are experiencing problems in the curriculum

can resolve them quickly and directly either during the lecture or during the

dedicated office hours. Personalized feedback has a positive impact on

students, as it makes learning processes easier, richer, and more significant,

all the while raising the motivation levels of the students.

E-Learning, on the other hand, still tends to struggle with student

feedback. Students completing regular assessments become dissatisfied when

they experience a lack of personalized feedback. The traditional methods of

providing student feedback don’t always work in an E-Learning

environment, and because of this, online education providers are forced to

CENTRAL LUZON COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

COLLEGE OF MARITIME EDUCATION

-3-

look towards alternative methods for providing feedback. Providing student

feedback in an online setting is still a relatively unsearched topic area, and it

might take a while for any specific strategies to become fully research-based

and proven to be effective.

The concept of E-learning was originally proposed at the 1999 Online

Learning Conference in the United States. According to Anderson (2008),

Reporting on a number of international studies that the mere use of

technology in the classroom does not guarantee learning improvement. Use

of information and communication technology for learning process is called

E-learning. E-learning is a term which is used to describe the online

education and web based training etc.

It has been defined by Jama, et al. (2019), as a type or system of

learning which is utilizing electronic technologies to access educational

curriculum outside traditional classrooms. Sangra, et al.(2011), defined E-

learning as “A method of teaching and learning that fully or partially

signifies the educational model used, based on the use of electronic media

and devices as tools for enhancing availability of training, communication

and interaction that helps in accepting novel ways of comprehending and

establishing learning” . Simply, E-learning courses are specifically delivered

via the internet to somewhere other than the classroom for enhancing or

-4-

supporting learning. That means E-learning is the use of network

technologies to create, foster, deliver and facilitate learning, anytime and

anywhere for empowering the individual learner so that the teacher/

trainer/tutor is no longer the gatekeeper of knowledge, while the role of

teachers is likely viewed as facilitators of knowledge process.

Oye, et al.(2011), defined E-learning as a unifying term used to

describe the fields of online learning, web-based training and technology

delivered instructions. Khan pointed that E-learning has been described in

various ways as learning that is using a number of different technologies and

methods for delivery e.g. Computer based training (CBT), Internet-based

training (IBT), Web-based instruction (WBI), Advanced distributed learning

(ADL), Distributed learning (DL) Distance learning or Mobile learning, etc.

According to the Ministry of education in Saudi Arabia established a

National Center of E-learning in most of Saudi universities. Based on the

data collected regarding the impact of E-learning on academic achievement,

there were conflicting findings in the literature which range from positive,

negative or even no significant difference in students’ performance between

online and live classes respectively. Many researchers believe that

technology is a tool that used to remove geographical barriers and to

-5-

facilitate learning anytime and anywhere without presence of lectures which

may foster deeper learning.

Several studies from González-Gómez, et al., (2016) have compared

F2F (face –to-face) teaching to online learning and/or blended learning in

order to try to define which of the formats provides, e.g., the highest learning

outcome, creates the most satisfied students or has the highest rate of course

completion.

Online learning is commonly defined in contradistinction to F2F

learning (e.g., Ryan et al., 2016). Its most prominent feature is the absence of

the physical classroom, which is replaced by the use of web-based

technologies offering opportunities for out-of-class learning independent of

time, place and pace.

Ryan et al. (2016) point out that “in the context of higher education,

the phrase online learning is often interpreted as referencing courses that are

offered completely online

According to Moravec et al. (2015), the study compares the results of

questions from the area of law where the tool was provided in a pilot version

with the results of questions, where the e-learning tool was not provided. The

researchers found that the e-learning tools have affected the students’ results.
CENTRAL LUZON COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

COLLEGE OF MARITIME EDUCATION

-6-

Nevertheless, the belief of the e-learning tool may possibly have a negative

effect on students who will depend on given materials was disproved

In a comparative study by Adams, Randall and Traustadóttir (2015)

the overall finding is that university students following a hybrid introductory

course in microbiology were less successful than their peers following the

same course in a F2F (face to face) version. Less interaction with the

material or a sense of isolation arising from less class attendance are counted

among potential reasons for the hybrid students’ lower success.

In new generation lacks creativity because Access of profuse

technology. The interaction between technology and learning is inseparable

in the 21st century. It is critical to understand the impact of technology in

education which leads to interest in school attendance and subsequently to

learning and creativity. Children can help one another in use of technology

as well as taught learn in universities (Shafieiosgouei, Nourdad,

Hassantofighi & Shafieioskouei, 2018).

According to Alismail (2015) in technology e-learning is a powerful

tool, which provides direct access to get information and knowledge by

themselves. E-learning leading to independent learning.

E-learning can refer to the situation where the interaction between

the students and the teacher is done through online system. Students are

received training and taught through online system and teacher may also in

the same building with them (Ajadi, Salawu, & Adeoye, 2008).

E-learning supports the widespread use of educational training. E-

learning has various advantages over the traditional techniques of learning

and it is superior. E-learning is the most convenient way to pursue a degree

in higher education. (Chomsky, 2014)).

Downes (2005) E-learning as we know it has been around for ten

years or so. During that time, it has emerged from being a radical idea---the

effectiveness of which was yet to be proven---to something that is widely

regarded as mainstream.

Some studies suggest students who are provided technology are more

motivated learners, such as in Halat’s (2013) study involving the use of

Webquests, which is examined in more detail in the literature review.

According to Tao et al (2006), this new environment for learning

that is centered on electronic networks has allowed learners in universities to

receive individualized support and also to have learning schedules that is

more suitable to them as well as separate from other learners. E-learning in

academics which is characterized by the use of multimedia constructs made

the process of learning more active, interesting and enjoyable (Liaw et al,

2007).

-8-

Many studies compare the effect on students’ learning outcome

generated by respectively F2F teaching and/or blended learning. In Bernard

et al.’s (2014) meta-study of blended learning in higher education, students

in blended programs have turned out to achieve slightly better than students

following traditional classroom instruction programs.

Moreover, several studies seem to agree that blended learning is

definable according to the relative time spent on respectively online and

F2F(face –to-face) instruction in courses. Less interaction with the material

or a sense of isolation arising from less class attendance are counted among

potential reasons for the hybrid students’ lower success. A suggested reason

for this negative difference in achievement for students following the hybrid

program is that these students had to deal with difficult concepts

independently and without sufficient explicit F2F teaching. In contrast,

another study reaches the opposite conclusion and points to similar

circumstances as a way of explaining. In fact, a better academic outcome for

students in a blended education program is precisely attributed to the

opportunities given to them for working independently through participation

in student-centered asynchronous collaborative learning activities supported

by Web 2.0 media such as Facebook (Northey et al., 2015).

In this study, researchers had determined the unforeseen interchange

of the mode of learning in all stages of education, from Kindergarten to the

Graduate School programs, not only in the Philippines, but in the entire

world. Since the swap test is developed, the virtual and modular classes

which are now being used, in lieu of the conventional or traditional, the

researchers had made a study to determine the impressions of seafaring

students on the use of E-Learning at Central Luzon College of Science and

Technology in the City of San Fernando, Province of Pampanga.

Theoretical framework

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology

comprising a five-tier model of human needs, often depicted as hierarchical

levels within a pyramid.

Needs lower down in the hierarchy must be satisfied before individuals can

attend to needs higher up. From the bottom of the hierarchy upwards, the

needs are: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-

actualization. This five-stage model can be divided

into deficiency needs and growth

needs. The first four levels are often

referred to as deficiency needs (D-

needs), and the top level is known as

growth or being needs (B-needs).

CENTRAL LUZON COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

COLLEGE OF MARITIME EDUCATION

- 10 -

Deficiency needs arise due to deprivation and are said to motivate

people when they are unmet. Also, the motivation to fulfill such needs will

become stronger the longer the duration they are denied. For example, the

longer a person goes without food, the hungrier they will become.

Maslow (1943) initially stated that individuals must satisfy lower-

level deficit needs before progressing on to meet higher level growth needs.

However, he later clarified that satisfaction of a needs is not an “all-or-none”

phenomenon, admitting that his earlier statements may have given “the false

impression that a need must be satisfied 100 percent before the next need

emerges” (1987, p. 69).

When a deficit need has been 'more or less' satisfied it will go away,

and our activities become habitually directed towards meeting the next set of

needs that we have yet to satisfy. These then become our salient needs.

Growth needs do not stem from a

lack of something, but rather from

a desire to grow as a person. Once

these growth needs have been

reasonably satisfied, one may be

able to reach the highest level

called self-actualization.
CENTRAL LUZON COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
1 CBMU Road, Upper Kalaklan, Olongapo City

COLLEGE OF MARITIME EDUCATION

- 11 -

However, growth needs continue to be felt and may even become stronger

once they have been engaged.

Every person is capable and has the desire to move up the hierarchy

toward a level of self-actualization. Unfortunately, progress is often

disrupted by a failure to meet lower level needs. Life experiences, including

divorce and loss of a job, may cause an individual to fluctuate between levels

of the hierarchy.

Therefore, not everyone will move through the hierarchy in a uni-

directional manner but may move back and forth between the different types

of needs. Maslow (1943, 1954) stated that people are motivated to achieve

certain needs and that some needs take precedence over others.

Our most basic need is for physical survival, and this will be the first thing

that motivates our behavior. Once that level is fulfilled the next level up is

what motivates us, and so on.

1. Physiological needs - these are biological requirements for human

survival, if these needs are not satisfied the human body cannot

function optimally. Maslow considered physiological needs the most

important as all the other needs become secondary until these needs

are met.
CENTRAL LUZON COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
1 CBMU Road, Upper Kalaklan, Olongapo City

COLLEGE OF MARITIME EDUCATION

- 12 -

2. Safety needs - Once an individual’s physiological needs are satisfied,

the needs for security and safety become salient. People want to

experience order, predictability and control in their lives. These needs

can be fulfilled by the family and society

3. Love and belongingness need - after physiological and safety needs

have been fulfilled, the third level of human needs is social and

involves feelings of belongingness. The need for interpersonal

relationships motivates behavior. Examples include friendship,

intimacy, trust, and acceptance, receiving and giving affection and

love. Affiliating, being part of a group.

4. Esteem needs are the fourth level in Maslow’s hierarchy - which

Maslow classified into two categories esteem for oneself and the

desire for reputation or respect from others.

Chapter 2

RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURE

This chapter presents the procedures which follows in the conduct of

the study. It includes the method of research that used the subject of the

study, the development and validation of the instrument, the data gathering

procedure and data, which statistically treated.

Research design

This research used quantitative method of research. Quantitative

research is all about quantifying relationships between variables. Variables

are things like weight, performance, time, and treatment. It measures

variables on a sample of subjects, which can be tissues, cells, animals, or

humans. It expresses the relationship between variable using effect statistics,

such as correlations, relative frequencies, or differences between means. It

deals with these statistics and other aspects of analysis elsewhere at this site.

In this study, it was focused on the design of quantitative research. First, it

described the types of study being used. Next, it discussed how the nature of

the sample affected the ability to make statements about the relationship in

the population. It then dealt with various ways to work out the size of the

- 22 -

sample. Quantitative research is a structured way of collecting and analyzing

data obtained from different sources. Quantitative research involves the use

of computational, statistical, and mathematical tools to derive results. It is

conclusive in its purpose as it tries to quantify the problem and understand

how prevalent it is by looking for projectable results to a given population.

This type of study had determined the level of satisfaction on the benefits as

experienced by Filipino seafarers while working on tanker ship.

Participants and sampling technique

The researchers had selected thirty (31) respondents. All of them

are experienced seafarers. Purposive sampling was used in the research

because the researchers considered the entire population of people with

specific characteristics. It was the purposive sampling method that was

utilized since the participants was chosen based on the available number of

respondents.

The study was conducted one week after the end of the Midterm

examination of the First Semester. There were thirty (31) experienced

seafarers’ respondents that were included in this research. All seafarers who

were assessed by the researchers with their questionnaire were considered as

respondents.

COLLEGE OF MARITIME EDUCATION

- 23 -

Research instrumentation

The researcher used the survey as their tool. A survey is described as

a brief interview or conversation with individuals on a particular issue. And

it also comes in various flavors, whether it's meeting people face to face or

passing out a questionnaire to fill in. The biggest difference between polls

and observations is that in a study, you don't watch participants, you ask

them about themselves.

The researchers have prepared separate questions on the LEVEL OF

SATISFACTION ON THE BENEFITS AS EXPERIENCED BY

SEAFARERS WHILE ONBOARD. The researchers conducted an online

survey. They used Google form to easily determine the result or answers of

the respondents using the articulated Likert scale of Very Satisfied, Satisfied,

Validity and Reliability

The validity of the sample size was treated through the use of Slovin’s

Formula to assure that the sample was able enough to reveal the challenges

of the whole study as this allow the researchers to compute for the valid

number of participants by assuming the desired percentage of accuracy and

providing the marginal error. The researchers used questionnaires as their

instrument to collect the needed data.

Data Gathering Procedure

Preparation - The researchers browsed and looked for information on

the internet that were used to endorse information and similar studies,

literature and hypotheses while formulating the title for this study. The

researchers have planned and allocated time before addressing the selected

respondents to create the questionnaires, validation letters and validation

forms within two (2) weeks. To have it ready and nice before the

administration, the researchers circulated the questionnaires and forms to the

valuators.

Retrieval - Following answering the questionnaires using the form

connect Google, the researchers collected questionnaires from the

respondents during the same day to review them immediately and coordinate

the compilation and download of information using a spreadsheet in order to

prevent losing time and data precision. 100% of the questionnaires have been

recovered

Treatment - After collecting the data, the researchers compiled,

treated and arranged the data to be collected, summarizing the findings to be

collected and displaying it across tables. The mathematical methods used to

handle the data were frequency and percentage. Below is the formula for the

estimation of the percentage. Formula: P = F / N x 100

Statistical treatment

To interpret the date effectively, the researcher will employ the

following statistical treatment. The Percentage, Weighted Mean and

ANOVA are the tools use to interpret data.

1. Frequency and Percent distribution. One of the most frequent ways to

represent statistics is by percentage. Percent simply means "per

hundred" and the symbol used to express percentage is %. One percent

(or 1%) is one hundredth of the total or whole and is therefore

calculated by dividing the total or whole number by 100.

2. Weighted Mean. This was used to determine the final weight of

scaled item.

Likert Scale
Scale Verbal Description
3.26-4.00 Very satisfied
2.50-3.25 Satisfied
1.75-2.49 Dissatisfied
1.00- 1.74 Very dissatisfied

3. ANOVA. ANOVA or Analysis of Variance is a group of statistical

models to test if there exist a significant difference between means. It tests

whether the means of various groups are equal or not. In ANOVA, the

variance observed in a particular variable is partitioned into different

components based on the sources of variation. An important fact to note is

that while we use ANOVA to find out whether the means differ

significantly, we actually compare the variances (hence the name –

ANalysis Of VAriance). While various related methods like hypothesis

testing, partitioning of sum of squares, additive models and experimental

techniques have been around since the beginning of the 19th century,

ANOVA as we know today was first used by Sir Ronald Fisher in 1925 in

his book 'Statistical Methods for Research Workers'.
