Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Our country suffers from multiple family problems such as

financial issues, mental illness, behavioral concerns and others.
One prominent complication is the separation of family members or
being in a broken family. Because of this, children will be the
most affected and brings discouragement in their studies.

This problem doesn’t exclude families in the city- Pagadian

City, and even the neighboring municipalities. This leads us the
reason to study the academic performance of the students of
Southern Mindanao Colleges and how having a broken family affects
their schooling. This is a relevant matter to study because of
its importance for the children, students to be aware of their
current situation and realize how strong they are because they
are fighting to survive an essential battle of their lives. The
study will also benefit the parents, to make them realize that
having a complete family is the most important foundation in our
society and having a broken family can affect their child’s
behavior in all instances. The family is an essential factor for
a human’s whole being, everything about a man, his background,
attitude, all of his achievements, his honor and dignity, relies
on the structure of the family a man lives in with. A family is
composed of a father a mother and their offspring, bonded by
their love for each other. This thought alone is a powerful
reason why this research must be conducted.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

A. GENERAL PROBLEM:
The study aims to understand the causes and effects of
the Family and how to avoid broken family relationship. That
may affect the academic performance of every student.

B. SPECIFIC PROBLEM:

1. What is broken family?

2. What are the causes and effects of the broken family?

3. What are the possible solution to avoid broken family?

C. TITLE:

BROKEN FAMILY: THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF BROKEN FAMILY THAT AFFECTS
THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN SOUTHERN MINDANAO COLLEGES

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will have a great help and will be a great
importance to the following group of people.

The study will be a great help to the following:

Students – This study will help the students who have been
experiencing broken family to be aware on the cause and
effects and how could they overcome it.

Parents – The parents will be aware on the effects of broken

family to their children.

Teachers – The teacher must be sensitive understanding to the

behavior of students who are experiencing broken family
relationships.

Future Researchers – The result of the study may help students

to use sources of information that will engage in the study.

4
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study is focused and limited only on the effects of

broken family to the academic performance of the Senior High
School Students of Southern Mindanao Colleges.

This study was conducted at Southern Mindanao Colleges Pagadian

City at October 2021.

RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Review of Related Literature

Family is the basic unit of society. This is the most

essential component of a country. A home is where a family lives.
So, if it will be broken, it can negatively affect all domain of
child development. And older children and teenagers may
experience some problems in their social, emotional and
educational functioning.

Grych and Fincham (1992) stated that family is the child’s

first place of contact in a world where having broken families
are no longer considered as something heartbreaking. Students of
these families are usually the ones to suffer as they feel as if
their world has been turned upside down. Students who experience
going through the hardship of their parents’ separation often
would say “others who have been a whole families wouldn’t
understand the feelings of some from a broken family” and those
arguments on the comparisons between groups of children from
broken and intact families.

The University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension

explains that the effects of a broken family on a child
development depends on numerous factors, including her age when
her parents separate and, on her personality, and family
relationships. In addition, Clements and Oelke (2007) identify
the two factors that cause poor academic performance as a
combination of personal and institutional factors. Personal
factors relate to the individual’s intelligence, knowledge and
ability.

6
The home environment or family has been recognized as having
a lot of influence on the academic performance of students.
Parent’s constant disagreement affects children emotionally and
this could lead to poor academic performance in school period
recently, a common assumption in the divorce literature was that
both parents living in the same household as the child would be a
better environment for children’s development than a single
parent family. (Nzewuanah and Ichado. 1998). And the
psychological development of the adolescent in the family is
influenced not only by what occurs in the environment, but also
the environments their parents spend a considerable time.

In addition, children are also great imitators of less than

perfect behaviors, they see their parents arguing constantly,
calling each other names, putting each other down or hitting each
other, you will probably see you then repeating our behaviors
they will probably insecure and these insecurities might reflect
in poor grades, bad behavior at school or home, or even
depression (McClanahan S&G. Sandelfur, 2004). To sum it up, no
matter how ideal a family in terms of their relationship, there
were still hardships and misunderstandings that will come along
the way. It is just a part of any family relationship anyway. But
the sad part is that when one of the family members gave up and
the others have no choice but to accept and let go. Broken family
is a major problem of society that should be given enough
attention that causes poor education of the children because they
feel depressed and they actually doing bad behavior at school or
even in homes.

Chapter III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

OVERVIEW OF THE CHAPTER

The study was conducted to comprehend or know what broken

family is. And why it can affect one’s behavior and academic
performance in school. To be able to gather the necessary data
the researcher utilized the description method. The chosen
respondents we are randomly chosen from a different grades and
tracks of Senior High School Department students in Southern
Mindanao Colleges, Pagadian City.

The high school students aware given a questionnaire to

evaluate everyone and to gather information about the causes and
effects of broken family relationships. The result of the survey
was then processed by computing weighed mean of each survey item.
The computed values were compared to the Likert scale for the
data interpretation. This section is to justify the means in
which the study was obtained and will help and giving its purpose
and strengths as it will be truthful and analytical.

RESEARCH METHOD

The design is descriptive at one end this research study aims

to describe record, analyze and interpret the conditions that
exist. It was a fact-finding investigation with adequate
interpretation. This design is usually the best method for
collecting information that will demonstrate relationships and
describe the world as it exists. Brickman Rog (1998) suggest that
descriptive studies can answer questions such as “what is or what
was”. It is a scientific method which involves observing and
describing the behavior of a subject without influencing it in
any way. It is mainly done because the researcher wanted to gain
better understanding of broken family relationship and explore
the existing certain phenomena.

It is also a diagnostic study as to the cause and effect

being studied very clearly. Diagnostic study is concerned with
cause and effect.

DIRECT-DATA SURVEY

According to Brubaker and Thomas (2000), direct data survey

is used to reveal the status of some phenomenon within an
identified class of people, organizations or regions at a
particular time through questionnaire to directly (survey)
collect information.

The aim of the survey is to obtained pertinent data to

achieve the researcher objective. The site of the study was to
the effects of students relationship status in the academic
performance of the questionnaire checklist was made. To response,
participant’s grades were gathered to satisfy the problem.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of the study were the students affected by

the new teaching method are surveyed. However, this study focuses
more on students from Southern Mindanao Colleges. The
researchers, as a student, are the chosen respondents among the
subjects in the study. Researchers also interview several other
students to obtain additional data and mixed views.

INSTRUMENTATIONS
We use qualitative research approaches in our research.
Qualitative essentially answers questions like how, why or how
with a specific phenomenon. The approach to qualitative research
has been shaped through interviews, focusing, among other things,
on understanding people's feelings, perceptions, and experiences.
