FACTS:

In an online survey, TIME magazine asked its readers to choose who should be included in its
annual list.

TIME listed 114 personalities it considered worthy to be on the "TIME 100." Readers vote yes
or no for the listed personalities.

After each vote readers are automatically shown the percentage of votes for "yes" or "no."The
voting ended on Sunday, April 16, 2017.

The official TIME 100 Most Influential People, selected by its editors will be announced on April
20.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte topped the poll after consistently leading the TIME 100
reader’s poll.

Duterte has been drawing international attention over his administration's war on drugs.

Duterte, the 16th president of the Philippines caps the unlikely journey of a provincial city
mayor whose brash man-of-the-people style pledges to crush crimes.

Pres. Duterte declared before a Supreme Court justice that he would "preserve and protect"
the constitution, which analysts say will likely see major changes during his six years in office.

On his election campaign, he promised to solve crime and drug abuse problem, Duterte said the
fight "will be relentless and it will be sustained".

But he also said he knows "the limits of the power and authority of the president", adding "I
know what is legal and what is not". During the campaign he had threatened to shoot criminals
and kill drug dealers.

Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said Duterte is admired by Filipinos and the
international community because he is a leader who acts for the common good.

The TIME 100 Reader Poll is an online survey of who the magazine's readers think should be
included in the publication's annual TIME 100 list of the world's most influential people.

In 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin came first in the list of the Time 100 poll, while US
Senator Bernie Sanders got to the top the following year.
Abella said the President’s efforts to prioritize public interest and welfare made him famous in
the international community.
Abella added that with or without the recognition, the President will remain true to his promise
to serve the country.
The result of the online poll will be announced on April 20 after Time editors have selected the
magazine’s final list of 100 most influential people.
The Time 100 is a yearly list of the most influential people worldwide in the fields of arts,
politics, business, and science and technology.
Next to Duterte are Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Vatican’s head of state.
Billionaire and Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg both got three
percent “yes” votes.
President Duterte has become known in the international community for his anti-drug war.
In three decades in politics, he has never lost an election. He is also the first city mayor to be
elected president without previously having held a national position.

"I think this is a fresh change," Jenny Lind Elmaco, a Manila-based political observer and
women's rights advocate, told Al Jazeera.

"Duterte is an authentic leader. He does not hide behind pleasantries, sugar-coat his opinions or
mince his words."

poor and common people," Abella said in a statement reacting to the TIME online poll.

"With or without the distinction, the President continues to be a hardworking government

"I was elected as president to serve the entire country. I serve everyone. But not only one.“
