LESSON

What is an Integer?

 An integer is a positive or negative whole number, including 0.

Example: Z=¿ {… ,-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …}

 A positive number has a “+¿ ” sign.
 A negative number has a “−¿“ sign.

Natural Numbers - is any whole number greater than zero.

Example: ( N )={1 ,2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , … }

Whole Numbers - is a number that is either 0 or a natural number.

Example: ( W ) ={0 , 1 ,2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , … }

Number Line and Ordering of Integers

 The interval between any integer and the next has the same length.
 Numbers to the right of the zero are positive numbers.
 Numbers to the left of the zero are negative numbers.

Example 1: Represent 3 on the number line.

Solution: On the number line, move 3 points to the right. 3 points to the right of zero.

Example 2: Represent the number -3 on the number line.

Solution: move 3 points to the left of 0.

The number associated with a point on the number line is called

Pairing of Opposites on a Number Line

 Numbers with the same distance from zero but in opposite directions from zero are called
opposites.
 A negative number is the opposite of its corresponding positive number.

Example: Consider the pairs of numbers 2, -2 and 4, -4. The number in each pair are equal
distance from zero.

2 and -2 are opposites of each other

4 and -4 are opposites of each other

Symbols in order to compare the values of integers:

(¿) means “is less than.”


(¿)means “is greater than.”
(≤ ¿ means “is less than or equal.”
(≥) means “is greater than or equal”

REMEMBER:
1. Every positive integer is greater than any negative integer.
2. Zero is less than every positive integer.
3. Zero is greater than every negative integer.
4. The greater a positive number, the lesser is its corresponding opposite.
5. There is no smallest integer and there is no greatest integer.

Absolute Value

 The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on the number line. If x represent a
number, then the absolute value of x written as:

Example: Consider the numbers 3 and -3.

3 units 3 units
Thus, the absolute value of −3 is3 and we write ǀ−3ǀ = 3.

Example: Write each expression without absolute value symbols.

a. ǀ9 ǀ = 9 The number 9 is 9 units from zero.

b. ǀ−9 ǀ = 9 The number -9 is 9 units from zero.
