LESSON
What is an Integer?
MATHEMATICS 7|
2
A positive number has a “+¿ ” sign.
A negative number has a “−¿“ sign.
Example: ( N )={1 ,2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , … }
Example: ( W ) ={0 , 1 ,2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , … }
The arrow indicates that there are more The arrow indicates that there are more
integers towards the left. integers towards the right.
The interval between any integer and the next has the same length.
Numbers to the right of the zero are positive numbers.
Numbers to the left of the zero are negative numbers.
Solution: On the number line, move 3 points to the right. 3 points to the right of zero.

Week 3 – Day 3
DEEPEN
Numbers with the same distance from zero but in opposite directions from zero are called
opposites.
A negative number is the opposite of its corresponding positive number.
Example: Consider the pairs of numbers 2, -2 and 4, -4. The number in each pair are equal
distance from zero.
REMEMBER:
1. Every positive integer is greater than any negative integer.
2. Zero is less than every positive integer.
3. Zero is greater than every negative integer.
4. The greater a positive number, the lesser is its corresponding opposite.
5. There is no smallest integer and there is no greatest integer.
Absolute Value
MATHEMATICS 7|
2
The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on the number line. If x represent a
number, then the absolute value of x written as:
x if x > 0
ǀxǀ = 0 if x=0
−x i f x <0
3 units 3 units
Thus, the absolute value of −3 is3 and we write ǀ−3ǀ = 3.
PRACTICE 2.
A. Directions: Fill in the blank with symbol > or < to make the statement true.
a. -5 = _____________ d. 20 = _____________
b. 0 = _____________ e. -100 = _____________
c. -10 = _____________ f. 29 = _____________
