LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Answer the following questions and statement based on your understanding about the module.

1. Discuss the different roles played by the quantitative and qualitative approaches
to managerial decision making. Why is it important for a manager or decision
maker to have a good understanding of both of these approaches in decision
making?

 The role played by the quantitative approaches to managerial decision making

are first it helps to translate the problem into a mathematical language to
objectively measure the problems. Next, it helps in presenting the quantitative
facts or data that might influence the management decision; it’s like choosing the
best option among the rest. On the other hand, the role played by the
qualitative approaches to managerial decision making are first, it helps in
knowing whether the presented solution have a good impact to the people
around the management or the solution is feasible or not. Since qualitative
approach is based on manager’s judgement and experience, it’s not necessary
for this approach to have quantitative data.
 It’s important for a manager or decision maker to have a good understanding of
both these approaches in decision making because, if you as a decision maker
will understand these two approaches you can combine it for the better decision
that you would make. Also, understanding these two approaches can prove your
effectiveness as a decision maker, especially, if the outcomes of the decision
that you’ve make is a big success because you use or you understand these two
approaches.

2. What are the advantages of analysing and experimenting with a model as opposed
to a real object or situation?
 Let’s define first what is model, models are representations of real objects or
situations and can be presented in various forms.
 The advantages of analysing and experimenting with a model as opposed to a
real object or situation are :
 It enables us to make inferences about the real situation by
studying and analysing the model.
 It helps the decision maker to make decision faster and more
accurately.
 It takes a little time to solved the situation
than the actual situation.
 It also offer convenience to gather information over in obtaining
the information in reality.
 The validity of any model can be verified by conducting the
experimental analysis and with relevant data characteristics.
3. Suppose that a manager has a choice between the following two mathematical
models of a give situation:

a. a relatively simple model that is a reasonable approximation of the real situation,

and
b. a thorough and complex model that is the most accurate mathematical
representation of the real situation possible. Why might the model described in
part (a) be preferred by the manager?

 I think the reason why model described in part “A” might be preferred by
the manager, because whether we admit it or not, not all models will
actually happen in a real situation, it may be close to the truth but it is still
not what we can say is perfect. Also, model “A” will help the manager to
understand that every decision that he/she will make may not be always
perfect but then it will be reasonable. It’s reasonable also for a manager
to choose simple model because it will take a little time to come up to the
possible solution. As a manager you have a lot of things to consider and
one of it is the time, your decision as manager will have a big impact in
one management, and if your decision is delayed there is a possibility that
it will greatly affect the management. So it’s better for a manager to
choose simple model to come up to immediate solution in one situation.
