HISTORY OF BADMINTON

Badminton has a surprisingly long history given its relatively recent introduction onto the Olympic
scene. Badminton was invented long ago; its origins date back at least two thousand years to the
game of battledore and shuttlecock played in ancient Greece, India and China. Badminton took its
name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, the home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport
was played in the last century. By coincidence, Gloucestershire is now the base for the International
Badminton Federation.

The history and origin of the Badminton game can be


trace back to the ancient Greece and China dated
more than 2,000 years ago, where games with
shuttlecock were used. A similar game called
“Hanetsuki” was also played in Japan in the 16th
century. It is believed that the direct descendant of
modern badminton game are from the ancient game
of “Battledore and Shuttlecock”. This game is played
by 2 or more persons with small racket and shuttlecock. The players will count the number of hits and
try to keep the shuttlecock up in the air for as long as possible.
In the 1600's Battledore and Shuttlecock was a game specifically for
upper class and noble people. It originated in Europe and there was no
net. The rich just hit it back and forth
In 1863, The game of badminton that we know today was invented.
Badminton got its name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, the
ancestral home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport was played in
the last century.
In 1877 the Bath Badminton Club formed where the officials made an
official rulebook that had rules and regulations.
In 1899 the All England Open Badminton Championships began. It was
the first global tournament and it didn’t matter where you were came
from. Everybody was welcome.
