"As an Online Language Teacher, I have learned the difference of Acquiring or Learning a
language, but until now I've been thinking what will be really essential in Learning a Language
towards understanding each other's culture etc. Can you tell me what between these two or do
you have any other methodology to learn a particular language, so I could apply that to my
future students, online or maybe when I decide to teach abroad"

ANSWER: I've been thinking what will be really essential in Learning a Language towards
understanding each other's culture etc.
LANGUAGE AND CULTURE ARE INTERCONNECTED. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE, IT
IS IMPORTANT TO LEARN THEIR CULTURE AS WELL BECAUSE EACH CULTURE IS DISTINCT FROM
EACH OTHER.

other methodology to learn a particular language, so I could apply that to my future students,
online or maybe when I decide to teach abroad"
I SUGGEST YOU WATCH SOME OF THE MOVIES AND READ MORE BOOKS ABOUT THAT
COUNTRY. ALWAYS ASK YOURSELF, “WHY DO I HAVE TO LEARN THIS LANGUAGE?” IS IT TO GET
A JOB, TO PASS THE TEST, TO COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER PEOPLE?

I'm Brent Loyd Licayan a 2nd year BA English Language Studies student would like to ask a
question to ma'am Shieba. About the challenges of ALT learning, did colonization ever become
a factor in learning English for Japanese students?

Answer: About the challenges of ALT learning, did colonization ever become a factor in learning
English for Japanese students? IT BECAME A FACTOR IN THE PAST BECAUSE THEY WERE
REQUIRED TO LEARN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. HOWEVER, DUE TO SOME FACTORS, LIKE THE
WAR, THE SENTIMENTS IN ABOLISHING ENGLISH WAS RAISED AND ONLY NIHONGO WAS
LEARNED BY THE JAPANESE CITIZENS.

This question is for our first speaker. Hello Maam, Good afternoon. Based primarily on your
study, have we gone to the point thinking that the English language is the domineering
language among the rest of languages in the world? Japan has never been considered English as
one of their official languages and not even spoken across the country, in what probabilities
that English could help much in preparing their students to survive in the 21st century
environment through the help of Filipinos and Non-Filipino ALTs?

ANSWER: have we gone to the point thinking that the English language is the domineering
language among the rest of languages in the world?
ENGLISH IS THE LINGUA FRANCA IN THE WORLD SO IT IS USED AS AN INTERNATIONAL
LANGUAGE FOR COMMUNICATION. THEREFORE, IT IS CONSDERED AS THE DOMINANT
LANGUAGE AROUND THE GLOBE
Japan has never been considered English as one of their official languages and not even
spoken across the country, in what probabilities that English could help much in preparing
their students to survive in the 21st century environment through the help of Filipinos and
Non-Filipino ALTs?
THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY IMPLEMNETED ENGLISH TO BE TAUGHT IN
SCHOOLS AS PART OF THE CURRICULUM. IT IS ALSO A REQUIREMENT TO ENTER INTO MOST
UNIVERSITIES AND SOME JOBS. ALSO, I THINK THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS NOT THE ONLY
FACTOR TO BE ABLE TO SURVIVE IN THE 21ST CENTURY. THERE ARE OTHER SKILLS NEEDED.
FILIPINO ALTS COULD HELP THEM BETTER UNDERTAND THE SITUATION IN A DEVELOPING
COUNTRY.

MSU GSC this question is for ma'am Shieba. Goodafternoon po Ma'am. Can it be said that
Filipino ALTs are more effective compared to Non-Filipino ALTs who also do not come from
western countries?
IN MY RESEARCH, I DIDN’T MEANT TO SAY THAT FILIPINO ALTS ARE MORE EFFECTVE THAN THE
NON-FILIPINOS. RATHER, THEY ARE MORE POSITIVE IN DEALING WITH THE JAPANESE CULTURE
AND TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES HERE. BOTH FILIPINO AND NON-FILIPINO ALTS ARE EFFECTIVE
IN THER RESPECTIVE WAYS.

Good eve po maam/sir. How does a particular country preserved their cultural identity
especially, globalization is rampant?
BY USING THEIR OWN LANGUAGE AND TAKING PRIDE IN THEIR OWN CULTURE.
GLOBALIZATION SHOULD NOT BE MEANS TO MAKE OTHER CULTURES EXTINCT. BUT THIS IS A
REALITY NOW. THEREFORE, YOU ,AS A FILIPINO YOUTH, SHOULD ALSO STRIVE TO PROMOTE
OUR CULTURE IN ANY MEANS YOU CAN

QUESTION:
Since it was mentioned earlier that there is still a stigmatized view of Filipino Assistant
Language Teachers in Japan, how can we develop such cultural competence to develop mutual
understanding with the students?
Medical caregiving services and English teaching became the two main fields wherein Filipinos
attempted to build workforce leverage. Furthermore, since the number of Filipino teachers
teaching English is considerably increasing ,the professional advantage might have changed
such images knowing that teaching is linked to the social appreciation conferred through the
task of an instructor in Japan.
The analysis of issues about these has been tackled by several considerable types of researches
centered on the specific condition of Filipino women being entertainers as well as their
struggles in Japan. The different angle of the working industry that Filipinos engage in Japan
nowadays is slowly beginning to shed light on education and medical labor niches.

Good afternoon. This question is for Ma’am Sheiba. Ma’am, this is regarding the struggles in
teaching English as a foreign language under the category difficulty in cross-culture issues.
Considering the sense of belongingness of English educators, have you guys experienced being
in the soto or the out group and how did u guys addressed it knowing that not having a
welcoming and warm workplace somehow affect teachers’ performance.

have you guys experienced being in the soto or the out group
YES, GIVEN THAT WE ARE NOT JAPANESE, YOU’LL ALWAYS BE A “SOTO”.
BUT SINCE I LEARNED THE LANGUAGE, I AM SLOWLY BEING PULLED INTO THEIR CIRCLE.
THUS, BECOMING AN “UCHI”. THIS IS REALLY AN INTERESTING TOPIC SO I SUGGESTREAD
MORE ABOUT IT TOO.

how did u guys addressed it knowing that not having a welcoming and warm workplace
somehow affect teachers’ performance.
YOU HAVE TO LEARN THEIR LANGUAGE AND CULTURE. YOU WILL FIND THAT JAPANESE ARE
FRIENDLY TO YOU IF THEY KNOW YOU STRIVE HARD TO BE PART OF THEM

This question is for Ma'am Sheiba po. Were there discrimination towards articulation and
pronunciation? Do accent matters considering that we articulate words different from the
native speakers?
I COULDN’T SAY IT’ IS“DISCRIMINATION”, THE FILIPINO ACCENT IS VERY DISTINCT FROM THE
AMERICAN AND BRITISH ACCENTS. I DON’T FIND IT DICSCRIMINATORY WHEN SOMEONE
WOULD TELL ME YOU HAVE A UNIQUE ACCENT BECAUSE I’M PROUD OF MY FILIPINO IDENTITY.
THIS IS WHAT MAKES US DISTINCT TO OTHERS. SOME OF THE STUDENTS WOULD ALSO THINK
I’M FROM CANADA, BUT I TELL THEM THAT I’M FROM THE PHILIPPINES.
ACCORDING TO MY STUDY, THERE WAS A STUDENT WHO TOLD THE FILIPINO ALT THAT HIS
ACCENT IS VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND. SO, BE PROUD OF IT

Do you suggest learning the Japanese to address those problems communicating with students
and teachers there?
YES! IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO LEARN THEIR LANGUAGE AND CULTURE TO BETTER EQUIPPED
YOURSELF WITH THE UNDERSTANDING OF EVERY ASPECT OF THE JAPANESE LIVES. YOU CAN
ALSO GAIN THEIR TRUST AND BE PART OF THEIR COMMUNITY.
