Ms. Lillian Musungu,
P.O. Box 41191 – 80100, Mombasa.
Elimu Ya Kenya School.

Dear Madam,
RE: FINDINGS ON SITE INSPECTION OF THE CLASSROOM BLOCK AT ELIMU YA KENYA SCHOOL
I hope you are well.
Subject to our site visit and the walk about with you, we have made the following findings:
1. Ground floor slab
The ground floor slab in the classrooms were mostly in good condition. We only noted cracks along
the length of the walkway.

2. Columns
All the columns seem to be in good condition with no signs of distress.

3. The First floor slab

We noted cracks running along the length of the rooms particularly in the work shop. We also noted
slammer cracks but in the same directions in the second classroom.
This signals the structure is undergoing additional stresses.
Given the age of the structure, it is unlikely that the slab was under designed but it cannot be ruled
out completely. Failure of slabs sometimes take a long time before signs of distress are visible.

4. Walls
There were a lot of cracks visible in the staffroom/ head teachers’ office, in the classrooms and also
in the washrroms.
Cracks at the windows level were going at 45° angle towards the ground floor slab.
All these issues have been noticed recently during the short rains. It is our view that the rains might have
caused shrinkage of the soil particles below ground (where compaction might not have been adequate)
which led to the settlement of part of the structure.
The settlement might have led to imbalance of loading of the structure causing part of the structure to
experience additional stresses leading to the issues that have been found.
From our findings we recommend as follows:
i. The damage at the walkway at the ground floor slab level be repaired. The whole walkway may
be demolished and redone with proper backfilling and compaction.
ii. The first floor slab needs to be propped. This can be done by installing structural steel beams
perpendicular to the direction of the major cracks.
This ensures that deflection is controlled and any additional stresses and loads are carried by
the structural steel members and transferred to the existing beams.
iii. The cracks on walls can be repaired.

We have attached separate to this document our quote for cost of repair of the structure for your
consideration.
We remain,
