IBVA Junior Summer Assignment

Welcome to the IBVA! In order to prepare you for your first year in the IBVA, your summer
assignment is focused on demonstrating your artistic skill, creativity, and analysis of artworks.
You will make two artworks, described below. On your first day in school, you will need to
deliver/show me the following -

1) Sketchbook with a Cover - An empty sketchbook with a personalized cover that you
made (it can be any size, but try to have one that is large enough to make sketches, but
small enough that you can travel around with)

2) Museum/Gallery Exhibition Review - Visit any museum/gallery exhibition over the

course of your summer and produce a one page report that contains images you took of
the exhibition, the title of the exhibit and artist(s) involved, and the location of the
exhibition. The report is a text that describes the exhibition, in your own words, your
opinion of the exhibition/artworks. This visit is essential as it will be the inspiration for an
artwork.

3) Two Artworks in the format of a Joseph Cornell box with corresponding texts -
Joseph Cornell was a 20th century artist who redefined the margins of the format of an
artwork. You will produce two artworks in this style which will contain images and objects
that have been collaged and arranged within the box. The box can be made from
anything including handmade box or even a shoe box. Write a small text (100 to 200
words) that describes the meaning or intent of the artwork. See below for more
information and examples.
Use your creativity and imagination to produce the following two types of artworks:

a) A Joseph Cornell box that expresses who you are, who you think you are, or
what constitutes your personality or style as an artist. This is very open-ended,
but must demonstrate something about you!

b) A Joseph Cornell box that is inspired from the exhibition visit you made a report
about. This can be from the overall exhibition, the artist(s), or a specific artwork,
but this Cornell box should have an inspired connection to this museum/gallery
visit.
"Cornell's signature art form is the shadow box. Infused with a dream-like aura, the shadow
boxes invite the viewer into Cornell's own private, magical world. Alternately known as "memory
boxes" or "poetic theaters," the boxes evoke the memories associated with the items contained
within, while also containing parallels with, or expressing reverence for, other art forms, such as
theater, ballet, and film."
